An assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Dr. Marquez is founder of the Africorps Volunteer Service and Study Abroad Program. A civil and mechanical engineer with a doctorate in environmental and health sciences, she works closely with grassroots organizations in San Antonio on environmental justice issues as well as “in the field” in The Gambia (West Africa), where she and her team help third world communities address water-related illnesses such as malaria, trachoma, and dysentery.
