What is the role of a School Counselor?

The school counselor is a professional
trained specialist with a background in behavioral sciences and human relations.
She or he works with students, parents, teachers, and the community to help students
succeed academically and personally. The counselor is required to have a
Masters Degree in School Counseling and specializes in identifying student needs
and helps to develop plans for meeting individual and group needs. The counselor's
comprehensive program includes proactive guidance lessons (Guidance Program Overview) and
small groups (Small Group Counseling)
to help students develop positive skills for achieving as life long learners and
for coping with challenges. The School Counselor also promotes respect for
all members of the diverse school community and models a welcoming, positive attitude.
The counselor strives to ensure that all students, regardless of background, have
access to high quality programs that all them to grow as students and individuals.
The School Counselor also coordinates with families and the surrounding
community to ensure access to services or resources for students.
In addition the counselor is able to act as a "consultant". in which she or he
consults with parents, teachers and administrators and other relavant individuals
to increase the potential for student success.
