Eligibility and Placement

Students Who Are Medically Fragile:

Students who are eligible for enrollment in the classes for the medically fragile must be residents of Bexar County or the surrounding area.

Criteria used to determine student educational placement vs. neighborhood schools include the following considerations:

  • need for continual/ongoing nursing assessment/intervention
  • student's fluctuating health status
  • need to continually alter treatment plan
  • number of scheduled and unscheduled nursing procedures
  • degree of risk to student's life
  • student's responsiveness to environment
  • student's responsiveness to instruction
  • impact/reactions of other students on home campus
  • degree of modification to curriculum/setting
  • health status compromised by multiple school settings or transportation involved

Placements may extend until the end of the school year in which the student is twenty one on September 1st.

Placement may be long or short term based upon individual student needs. An adapted ALE curriculum is provided for these students. Students needing long term physical placements may remain at habilitation through the end of the school year in which they are twenty on September 1st.

Initial placement decisions are made at the student's Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meeting. These decisions are generally based on the student's chronological age, medical status, and educational needs. students are typically assigned to classrooms based on their age. Changes in a student's classroom assignment may be recommended by the Principal after consultation with the teaching and nursing staff.
