INTRODUCTION

Do you have a favorite series of books that you just love? Many third grade students just love the "Fudge and Super Fudge" series, the "Little House" series, and the "Harry Potter" series, to name a few. But do you know anything about the authors who wrote them? As a part of our book report project, you will be researching several popular series' authors, finding out facts about their life, books they wrote and other interesting information. You'll use what you find in a timeline and as a part of a project related to the book you read.

PLAN:

Your authors project will consist of two tasks. Task One will have you researching 5 famous authors that appeal to third graders, finding out basic life information and making your own timeline showing their dates of birth. You will use an organizer, part 1 to gather your information. From that information, you will choose 1 author and a book he/she has written to read. You will find additional information on that author and put it into the organizer, part 2. After finishing the book you will present a summary of the book with additional author information as one of the following:

  • A Publisher newsletter (Verbal Linguistic) (Intrapersonal) (ST)
  • A Publisher Bookjacket (Visual-Spatial)(Intrapersonal)(ST)
  • A Partner project that includes a powerpoint backdrop for an interview with the author (including a book summary.) (Interpersonal) (Bodily Kinesthetic)(IT)(SF)
  • "You Design It" You propose a project of your own design that includes both book summary and author information.(Intrapersonal) (NT) (Subject to teacher approval.

DO

Task 1: Click on each of the authors below to find out when and where they were born, and Use your organizer, part 1 to gather your information. Now, using Timeliner, put that information on a simple timeline.

Task 2: Choose a book from one of the authors. You will do additional research on that author using the organizer, part 2. After reading the book, decide how you will showcase your book and author. (See the ideas above.) Open the appropriate program (Publisher or Powerpoint.) If you are doing the activities in Publisher,go to the template folder to find the folder called "Famous Authors" to get your template. Fill in your template and add your graphics or make your own. If you are doing the Powerpoint backdrop and interview, you may plan your interview on your own. If you'd like you may use a powerpoint planner to design your backdrop.

Click on the author of your choice to find out more:

Using what you learned, design your final project (see above,) making sure you include all the information you have gathered.

REVIEW
