Explain briefly:  The entirety of the first grade curriculum of this unit meets most of the intelligences and learning styles.  Using the interdisciplinary  web, students have been given a variety of activities to experience success throughtout the unit.  With the addition of 2 higher level questions following the map activity, students must us critical thinking to analyze what they have learned to construct knew knowledge.

 

 

 


 

Lesson Implementation

[kt5] Instructional Strategies:

 

1.  Students will have already participated in a variety of map activities (in a variety of intelligences and learning styles) in the classroom.

2.  In the lab, students will review "bird's eye view and cardinal directions while view a 3 dimensional map on the floor.

3.  Standing on the X "beneath" the map, students will locate items that are close to the cardinal direction labels and then draw those items on their similar map in Kid Pix.

9.        

4.  Following the map activity, students will answer 2 critical thinking questions requiring them to use the information they have learned to construct new knowledge.

[kt6] Accommodation/Modification Options:  Students could work in pairs to help students needing extra help.  Teachers could script the oral answers of those needing language art help.  For those students needing enrichment, they could draw a map of the computer lab.

 

 

Prerequisite Student Skills:  Students should be able to use the basic tools of Kid Pix and already know the Sci/SS vocabulary for this unit.

 

 

Time Frame (Example:  45 minutes, 2 hours, ongoing all year): 45minutes

 

 

Resources or Supplies Needed:

Taped rectangle on floor, labeled with the cardinal numbers.  Three dimensional items to place on the map (small doll houses, buildings, cars, animals, etc.)
