Curriculum

The curriculum developed and administered by all NISD fine arts instructors in all disciplines of instruction is aligned with the National Standards for Fine Arts and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Fine Arts as outlined by the Texas Education Agency.

Each discipline of fine arts study provides extensive opportunities for all students to develop 1) an appreciation  2) an understanding  and 3) a mastery of the skills utilized within each fine arts discipline.  Instruction targets the student’s understanding of clear and methodical techniques (process) that result in a successful product (or performance).

Current Events in Curriculum:

Elementary Level:

SB 530 -   Requires students in grades K-5 to engage in moderate to vigorous daily
activity for at least 30 minutes (beginning 07-08 school year)

NISD students will fulfill this requirement through their physical education
instructional period  as well as through carefully designed physical activities
conducted during their academic class time.

The fulfillment of this SB 530 requirement will not take away any instructional
time from a student’s assigned fine arts class period.

Secondary Level:

SB 530 – Requires students in grades 6-8 to engage in moderate to vigorous daily activity
for at least 30 minutes for a minimum of 4 semesters during those grade levels
as the district’s physical education curriculum (beginning in 08-09 school year)

NISD students are currently engaged in a physical education curriculum that
               far exceeds this TEA requirement.

The fulfillment of this SB 530 requirement will not impact the current
availability of fine arts courses presently offered to students in middle school.

SB 530 – Requires students in grades 3-12 to participate in “fitness testing” as outlined
                by TEA.

NISD Physical Education Department will identify, train, and coordinate a
team of physical education instructors to administer this fitness test to students
               on district campuses.

The fulfillment of this SB 530 requirement will be carefully planned to  coordinate most fine arts testing to occur by ensembles and during times that keep loss of instructional time to a minimum.  Fine arts instructors will not administer any physical fitness tests.
