Beginning in 2007, all Northside high school students will be required to complete a minimum of 26 credits, and pass the TAKS Exit-Level tests in order to graduate from NISD high schools.

All entering freshmen will be placed on the Recommended Graduation Program to earn 26 credits. Students who wish to follow either the Northside Minimum Graduation Program or the Distinguished Achievement Program should consult with their campus counselor.

Northside Graduation Programs
(for students in 9th Grade in 2007)

Minimum

Participation in the Northside Minimum Graduation Program requires written request by a parent following consultation with the student's counselor.

English 4 credits
Mathematics

to include Algebra and Geometry

3 credits
Social Studies
World History or World Geography 1 credit
U.S. History 1 credit
U.S. Government 0.5 credits
Economics 0.5 credits
Science

to include Biology/Integrated Physics/Chemistry or Biology I, Chemistry I, or Physics II

2 credits
Academic Elective

selected from either World History or World Geography, or another science

1 credit
Physical Education

Limit two credits: to include Foundations of P.E.

1.5 credits
Health 0.5 credits
Technology Applications 1 credit
Communication Applications / Speech 0.5 credits
Electives 7.5 credits
Total 24 credits
Recommended
Distinguished

The Distinguished Graduation Program is the same as the Recommended Graduation Program with the following differences:

  1. Students must have 3 consecutive units of an International Language
  2. Students will take 2.5 elective units in State approved courses in grades 9-12 relating to TEKS, state approved innovative courses, or ROTC for one to four credits.
  3. Students must complete four advanced measures that require student performances that are equivalent to college or professional work, e.g., Dual Credit/College-level courses, Independent Study Membership, AP exam scores of three or above, or an original research or project judged by external sources.

Requires four Advanced Measures that may include research projects judged by an independent panel, Advanced Placement exam scores of 3 or better, dual credit classes, or college courses with grades of 3.0 or higher.
