Commander F.R. "Dick" Scobee

Scobee Elementary was built in 1987 and opened for the first time for the 1987-88 school year. It was the first school named in honor of F. R. "Dick" Scobee, the commander of the Challenger Space Shuttle Crew that perished on January 28, 1986. Scobee was chosen as the school's namesake not only because he was a hero who challenged us to "reach for the stars", but also because he had many personal ties to our great city, San Antonio.
