There are many variations one can take to create Illustrations for student made
and teacher made e-books. The following suggestions are only a few:
- SCAN images:
- 5"x7" cardboard - consider using colored markers or go for
a black and white effect by limiting marker use to black. SCAN your pictures.
- Avoid pastels if scanning
- Try not to use anything larger than this to keep your image small. You
don't want to insert a large image file into a web page as this will take
longer to download.
- Consider using foam trays as a base and modeling clay or Plasticine
to create the illustrations (see Barbara Reid's books for inspiration)
- Take DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHS of images:
- If illustrations are too large or too messy (pastels) to scan. Display
on a wall and photograph the illustration. Be careful when taking photographs
of pictures as it may be difficult to keep a straight edge.
- 3-D models, dioramas, and paper sculpture
- Students can dress up as characters
- Create illustrations using tissue paper (like Eric Carle)
- Computer Applications:
- Use a graphic application like KidPix or Paint and export as a .gif
- Use clipart from presentation application
- Google for free clipart and animations
Adding Sounds to your e-book:
- Most PCs come with some kind of SOUND RECORDER. This can usually be found
in the accessories. Students or teachers can record themselves reading the
story, save the file and insert into their PowerPoint or web page.
- Most presentation applications have a record feature that allows students
or teachers to record their voices right on the slide.
- Google for sound files that will enhance the story. Create a link from the
story to the sound. Be sure to download the sound file before linking. You
never want to link directly to the sound, that is called stealing bandwidth
and is deeply frowned upon.
