6th Grade: 2007-2008 This class will begin with an emphasis on team building with a series of activities designed to get the students to know and work with each other. The next unit will emphasize creativity, discussing and participating in the areas of fluency, flexibility, originality and elaboration.This will lead us to a cultural theme that will emphasize their own ethnicity when they examine various ways to learn about their own culture as well as the cultures of others in the class. This will be part of an independent study that will culminate in presentations and a "cultural buffet day." This will lead us into our next unit which is a visual perceptions unit that will allow the students to use their creativity to delve into the world of visuals. They will get to see themselves and their surroundings in different forms and ways. Our last main unit of the year will be our CSI - Creative Stevenson Investigators. The students will learn how experts handle a crime scene and use forensic evidence. The students will write and perform small mystery plays by groups. Presentation dates will be added at a later date. Event dates: Tuesday, Oct 24, 2007 to the Institute of Texan Cultures. 7th Grade: 2007-2008 The grade sevens, after a couple of weeks getting to know their teachers and their classmates, will learn a little about how their brain works as they explore the world of metacognition. They will be making a license plate featuring their "brainworks" and presenting it to the class. Rubric for license plate. After this unit they will take a journey throughout Texas as they use their creativity to produce a "Texas Travel Log." We will then get ready for our exciting Mentathlon event with several weeks of practice activities. We will culminate this year with a Texas Ranching Unit featuring a Chili Cook - Off. 8th Grade This group of students will spend two weeks on team building, especially since we will emphasize "Ropes" activities in Fall.. This leads into a further metacognition study with an examination of their learning styles. After they have created a "ME", they will turn their attention to a study of leadership and power. They will participate in several simulations that will lead to discussions on power. This moves on to a debate unit where students will learn the styles and techniques of debate. The power unit will conclude with a "mock" trial section where students will act out roles in court cases. Event dates: Ropes at McGimsey Scout Park - Nov 28 and Dec 11. Courthouse: April 2 and 3, 2008 Mock Trials presentations the week of May 7th and May 14th on their GT day. |
