Attendance Rules

Texas School Law (Sec. 25.085. COMPULSORY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE | Sec. 25.094. FAILURE TO ATTEND SCHOOL ) states that students must be in attendance at least 90% of the time to receive credit for a course. This means that students may not miss more than nine (9) days to a first semester course, nine (9) days to a second semester course, or eighteen (18) days for a year long course. If the student is in attendance less than 90%, the highest grade he or she may receive is a 69. REGAINING CREDIT DUE TO EXCESSIVE ABSENCES The Attendance Recovery Program (AR) is a means for students to make up absences accrued during the school year. Taft offers an AR almost every Wednesday during the school year in room 209A. The student will be credited one-day in all classes for each three hours of attendance. Wednesday AR is from 4:15 pm to 7:15 pm. Students must 1) be on time, 2) sign in 3) be in NISD dress code, and 4) bring work to do for the one or three hour period. AR time is used make up work they may have missed due to absences as well as clock time. **During any Attendance Recovery, students must attend the full session and be productively working on school assignments to gain credit for the time served. ** AR may also be accomplished by attending teacher tutoring sessions for any class where the student has excessive absences (at least 45 minutes of tutoring) or going to the one-hour detentions offered Monday through Friday 4:15 to 5:15 after school and notifying the detention supervisor you are there for AR. Monday through Friday Attendance Recovery 4:15 to 5:15 (One Hour) = One class period absence regained
Wednesday Attendance Recovery 4:15 to 7:15 (Three Hours) = One Full Day Absence Regained or Three class periods regained. Approaching The End Of The Semester/Course Students must be aware that as the end of the semester or course approaches, AR session times become limited. Arrangements to recover attendance should be made well before the last week of the end of the semester/course. Please be advised that if a student is absent without an excuse for 3 or more days or parts of days in a four-week period, or 10 or more days within a six-month period, the student's parents and/or the student are subject to prosecution under the Texas Education Code. For further explanation of attendance, refer to your Student/Parent Handbook, pages D-3 through D-7. |
