Physical Techniques

All District computers have network names. Visit your CIT for information on locating the computer's name.

Big Labels

  • Naming or numbering computers helps direct students to the right location during instruction. It will help you, too, as a seating chart.
  • Computer labs will have each computer station clearly marked, usually on the monitor.
  • It is okay to assign particular computers to particular students.

Signs and Directions

  • Student directions can be posted on or near each computer.
  • Pre-printed index cards are great, too, for students to have at each computer.
  • Webquests, Trackstar, or Single Site Explorations provide great directions to students.

Movement

  • Teachers can assign certain tasks at certain computers and rotate students through each station. Timers are great for "automated" student movement.
  • Regular rotation works for assignments that are completed over time. In this scenario,a student finishes computer work and signals the next student on a list to use the computer.

Assistance

  • How students ask for assistance while they are using computers is important.
  • Cups on Top - simple plastic cups can be placed on top of a monitor or CPU for a visual, non-verbal call for help.
  • Student Experts - you can assign an extraordinary student who has already mastered the objectives to be the Wizard for the day and respond to "hands up for help".
