Deployment Planning

Deployment Milestones image: 1. Campus meeting and walk-through, 2. Campus software list, 3. Hardware repurpose plan, 4. Deployment, 5. Hardware and software check

A successful deployment requires close coordination between members of the campus staff , Technology Services staff, and other NISD organizations.  The Project Manager (PM) assigned to your project will be responsible for leading the project team. Campus leadership will attend a project kickoff meeting. The first task will be a campus meeting. At this meeting the campus leadership, CIT, and head custodian will receive detailed information about the entire project. This includes a timeline with specific deadlines for the important milestones.  In addition, the PM and the CIT will conduct a campus walk-through.  This is a room by room survey that is used to determine the new computer requirements and to inventory the old computers that will either be repurposed by the campus or removed from the campus.

The first piece of information due from the campus is the campus software list. The CIT, in conjuction with campus leaders, facilitates the creation of a campus software list.  This list includes software purchased by central office departments, as well as any purchases made by the campus.  Technology Services will provide the CIT a spreadsheet with central office software purchases.  Accuracy in the campus software list is vital to a successful deployment.  The project team will work closely with the CIT to assure accuracy of the campus software list.  The software list is used to develop the software images that will be installed on the new computers.

The next milestone is the submission of the hardware repurposing plan.  Certain hardware can be reused for student use. Refer to the Repurposing documents below for more information.  The PM will work closely with the campus to develop the repurposing plan.

Depending on the size of the school and the number of computers and classrooms, the actual deployment may take one to three weeks.  The PM will provide a day by day deployment plan.  Each night a Technology Services crew will replace the hardware and install the software based on the campus software list. The crew will also move existing hardware according to the repurpose plan and reload software on the repurposed computers.

A successful project requires good records, accurate deployments, detailed testing, and good follow up on problems detected.  Your project team is committed to providing a quality project. The hardware and software must be checked to ensure it works properly. The hardware/software quality check is a collaborative effort between Technology Services and the campus staff and takes several days to complete.  Any problems or concerns should be addressed to your PM for resolution.
