What is Active Directory?

Northside has over 30,000 computers/laptops. With more than 11,000 staff and 40,000 student network accounts, managing the hardware and network accounts can be very tedious. Active Directory (AD) is a network environment. It allows our network administrators to efficiently manage our continually growing network. 

What are some of the benefits of AD?

AD allows network administrators to deploy some software and software updates remotely to computers District-wide across the network.  This means that in many cases users can have properly licensed software installed without having to wait for a technician to physically come to the campus to do the installation.

Remote file access for staff is another benefit of AD.  This means that staff can access their home directory and any shared drives from home via the Internet.

Enhanced security is one of the major benefits of AD.  Our network holds extremely sensitive student and staff data and needs to be protected from viruses and other malware.
