Villarreal celebrated with Harcourt Assessment Inc. on May 8, 2007 at the NISD Partnerships Award Ceremony. Harcourt was honored as the NISD 2007 Partnership-of-the-Year for their work with Villarreal students in the HTTP email mentoring program. We are especially proud to have NISD's Elementary Teacher of the Year right here at Villarreal! Third grade teacher Noemi Gonzales was given this high honor at a special ceremony honoring all campus teachers of the year throughout the district.

It was a special surprise for Ms. Gonzales when she was announced as the Northside ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year!

We are pleased to announce that for the second year in a row, Villarreal students are the top winners in Harcout Assessment's Black History Month Essay Contest. This year Montreay won 1st place for her essay about Martin Luther King, Jr. Linda won 2nd place for her essay on Rosa Parks. They are pictured with Principal Lori Gallegos and their teacher Ms. DeVleeschower.

On December 14, Mrs. Yolanda Rodriguez was awarded a NEF grant for her Pre-Kinder project.
On November 1, Noemi Gonzales' 3rd grade classroom was filled with cheers and tears as News-4 WOAI and Sylvan Learning Centers surprised her as the October Teacher of the month! One of her students had written to WOAI to share the great things that Ms. Gonzales does everyday! News-4 WOAI's Maclovio Perez and Ms. Gonzales' mom were among those to congratulate her as she received her award!
On October 26, another NEF grant was awarded to Mrs. Muñoz by ATPE. This grant will give money to buy novels for students and mentors to use in an online book club called READ-Reading with E-mail and Adult Discussion.
We at Villarreal would like to bid a fond farewell to Mrs. Rosie Jimenez. After 21 years of dedication to the staff and students of Villarreal, she has retired. She has been Villarreal's ECT (Computer Teacher). We wish her well and hope she enjoys retirement.

Villarreal Elementary's first entries in Northside's Annual Digital Media fair produced some surprising results. We had two 5th place winning entries and one 1st place Winner!

Their entry: The Rooster Who Went to His Uncle's Wedding in the Team Desktop Publishing-Multi Page (K-2) category was chosen as the first place winner from all NISD Elementary Schools! Congratulations to Genisis, Daisy, Mario, Danise, Destiny, Jacob, Karina and Oscar from Mrs. Rodriguez's 2nd grade class.
Mrs. Sekula, Villarreal Reading Specialist, was treated to an extra special Birthday on May 16th. She found out that she was a regional finalist in the H.E.B. Excellence in Education Award. State finalists will be announced in June. H.E.Buddy and friends brought her flowers, balloons, a cake, and a $1,000 check in recognition of her accomplishment. The school was also awarded a check for the same amount. Congratulations to Mrs. Sekula and to Villarreal for having her as part of our team. Good luck in June!
Two Villarreal fifth graders were recognized by Harcourt Assessment for their writing skills on Monday, February 27, 2006. Myka and Esmeralda wrote essays about two notable figures in Black History. They attended the Black History celebration at Harcourt Assessment where they read their essays and were presented with awards. Myka wrote the 1st place essay and Esmeralda was the author of the 2nd place essay. Congratulations to these two wonderful students! Thank you for representing Villarreal!
In December 2005, Miss Murray and Mrs. Muñoz were awarded separate NEF (Northside Education Foundation) grants for projects at Villarreal. Miss Murray will be using her grant money to increase video documentation at the campus level. Mrs. Munoz will start a robotics club in the Spring.  
  Villarreal Elementary was a recipient of a $1,000 Best Buy te@ch grant in November 2005. This money was used to furthur develop our video production of the morning announcements and other Audio/Visual needs. This included microphones and software to aid in video capture.
