The Staff at Dr. Joe Ward Elementary has been very fortunate to receive several grants each year over the past three years. The 2005-2006 school year is off to a great start with six grants being awarded to teachers in the first quarter of the grant year. We were honored to be presented these grants by Bennie Cole and Kenneth Sedlock.

Mrs. Ashburn received a grant called "Sea the Weigh We Learn?"  Funds will be used to purchase reading and math activities that target the Multiple Intelligences.The second grade classes will have many hands-on  learning centers that focus on reading and math skills using different intelligences.  Second grade is making a  traveling beach bag full of reading, math and writing games for active home participation .	Mrs. Chamberlain's grant is for an Accelerated Reader program designed to improve reading comprehension  in the first grade.  The goal is to increase the student's reading comprehension level while instilling a love for reading.
Mrs. Koehler's grant is to be used to purchase books, maps, and photos  to illustrate how significant people, places, events and decades of the 20th Century have influenced the development of our nation.	Mrs. Lamm received a grant to enhance her  teaching of Multicultural Geographic Awareness.
Mrs. Polk and Mrs. Meadows received a $1,000 grant from the wonderful people from AXA Financial/Equitable Life to enable every 4th and 5th grader to attend a San Antonio Symphony Performance."Music allows us to celebrate and preserve our cultural heritage, and also to explore the realms of expression, imagination, and creation resulting in new knowledge. Therefore, every individual should be guaranteed the opportunity to learn music and to share in musical experiences."  An experience of attending a live orchestral performance often inspires children to make music a permanent activity in their life, encouraging them to pursue band and orchestra in middle school.	Mrs. Willome received a grant to purchase digital  cameras, so that her Kindergarteners can learn how to compose a picture and create learning materials.
On Decemebr 1, 2005, the Northside Education Foundation held an Awards Ceremony in honor of their successful pledge drive. Dr. Joe Ward Elementary received a $ 50.00 check and an apple to recognize the Ward Staff total donation of $ 3,000.00	Mr. de la Garza, NEF car driver, and Mrs. Koehler
Mrs. Polk and her daughter presented a special award to AXA Financial/Equitable Life for their sponsorship of the Ward students trip to the symphony.	The ten schools honored for their contributions to NEF.
The NEF Prize Patrol visited Dr. Joe Ward Elementary onDecember 14, 2005 and presented Mrs. Lamm her NEF apple.	Mrs. Willome also received  a grant from the  second round of awards for the year
Mrs. Koehler received a mini-grant from NEF to  enhance the Gifted and Talented students' study of the Solar System.	Mrs. Lamm received a NEF Mini-Grant to further develop her Kindergarten students'  ability to solve problems.
