Pumpkin Mania

Each year the GT classes spend a day on pumpkins. During the day we measure area, length, perimeter, mass
and circumference. We also learn that the pumpkin is part of the Cucurbitacea family and includes
squash, melons, gourds, and cucumbers. We bring pumpkins from home and carve jack-o-lanterns and discuss
how at one time jack-o-lanterns were carved from turnips, beets and potatoes by people in Europe and not
until Columbus brought pumpkins seeds back to Europe did the Europeans know what pumpkins were. Pumpkins are a native North American crop.
