Uranus
by Michelle

Uranus is  the seventh planet rotating around the sun. It is known as a Jovian planet  like Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars. Uranus is about 2.7 light years away from the Sun. It is called a gas giant, too. They named Uranus because of its Jupiter like appearance. It is located between Saturn and Neptune. Uranus's diameter in kilometers is 51,118. It is blue due to the atmosphere's 2% methane, it also the high altitude photometical smog and methane Uranus is also a little green.

In miles, Uranus is 31,693. It was William Herschel who discovered Uranus in the year 1781. In 1787, William Herschel discovered two of Uranus's moons which were  Titania and Oberon. Most of the moons were discovered by Voyager 2. Uranus' moons are close around. Saturn and Neptune are around Uranus also. One year on Uranus is 83.75 Earth years.

Uranus is big enough to hold 64 Earth sized planets. The innermost ten moons of Uranus are Cordelia, Bianca, Orphelia, Puck, Belinda, Cressida, Juliet, Rosalind, Desdemona, and Portia. The average temperature of  Uranus is either -184 degrees Celsius or -300 degrees Fahrenheit. Uranus is the third largest planet in the solar system. It has a total of 21 moons, and 5 of them are big while the rest are small.

For Uranus to make one orbit around the Sun it takes 30,684 days. Uranus weighs 14.6 times heavier than the Earth. The names of the moons are: Orphelia, Cordelia, Cressida, Bianca, Juliet, Desdemona, Portia, Rosalind, Belinda, Puck, Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, Oberon, Caliban, Sycorax, Prospero, Setebos, Stephano, and 1986410. The distance away from the sun is 2,871 million kilometers. Uranus's density is 1.29.

If you were to weigh 70 pounds on Earth, on Uranus you would weigh 82 pounds, so it most likely adds about 12 pounds or so. It has many black rings, but has nine main rings. It is possible to see the nine main rings. Uranus's moon Oberon is the outer most moon. The launch of  Voyager 2 was in the month of August 20, 1977. In the year of 1981, Uranus received a visit from Voyager 2. Uranus was named for the father of the Titans, and also god of the skies. Uranus is another outer planet. Uranus was Earth's husband and lord of the skies. Uranus was also king of all gods until his son Saturn overthrew him.

Uranus's rotation takes 17.24 hours. No other planet that we know of spins on it's side. The reason Uranus spins on it's side is because scientists believe a large object crashed into Uranus and changed it's orbit. Most of Uranus's moon's names come from Shakespearian plays. The three gases of Uranus are methane, helium, and hydrogen. Uranus is an outer planet because it outside the asteroid belt, which divides the inner planets from the outer planets.
