
John Glen is a former astronaut. His complete name is John Hershel Glenn, Jr. He was born in Cambridge, Ohio, on July 18th, 1921.
John Glenn was raised in New Concord, Ohio. He is married to the former Anna Magare Caster. His parents names were John Hershel Glenn and Clara Sprout Glenn. He has earned many awards and special honors. Some of those awards are the Distinguished Flying Cross on six occasions. The Air Medal with eighteen clusters for his service during the World War 2 and Korea. The Navy Unit Commendation for his service in Korea. He also owns the Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal, the American Campaign medal, the World War 2 Victory; he won the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and many more.
John Glenn has over 5,455 hours of flying time including 1,900 hours in jet aircraft. That made him want to train to be an Astronaut.
John Glenn had entered the Naval Aviation Cadet Program in 1942. He was graduated from this program and commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1943. After advanced training, he joined the Marine Fighter Squadron 155 and he spent a year flying F-40 fighters in the Marshall islands.
During the World 2 John Glenn flew 59 combat missions. After the war John Glenn was a member of the fighter Squadron 218 on the North China patrol and served on Guam. From June 1948 to December 1950 John Glenn was an instructor in advanced flight training at Corpus Christi, Texas.
John Hershel Glenn Jr. was the first American to orbit Earth and he was the oldest person to ever fly in space. John Glenn was also a famous senator in Ohio. John Glenn did many famous things in his life. John Glenn was given a second space flight 36 years after his first flight. He has been given a lot of medals and special honors.
He had gotten a B.S. in engineering at Muskingen College in New Concord. John Glenn had already learned how to fly at the small New Philadelphia air field. John Glenn had received a bachelor of science degree in enginering. John Glenn would write many years later of his childhood, ``A boy could not have had a more idyllic early childhood than I did``.
At the age of 2 young John Hershel Glenn Jr. moved
with his parents to New Concord where his father opened a plumbing buissness.The
Glenns built a home that doubled as a rooming house for students from near
by Muskingen College. New Concord is where John Glenn attended College
and how he made it to be the awesome astronaut he is now!
