Moons of Each Planet
by Nicole

Our Earth has only one moon, its name is Luna. Luna is about 384,400 kilometers away from Earth. People say that Luna is a beautiful moon to be about half the Earth's size. Some scientists say that Luna is a double plant system. On Luna there are big scars, they come from collisions in-between the Earth and Luna, or they could be from other objects floating in space.

Mercury and Venus have no moons in their orbit, because of weak gravity. They will never be able to pull anything in their orbit, but they would be able to pull something in if it wasn't for their weak gravity.

Mars has only two moons, there names are Deimos and Phobos. Mars's two moons are smaller then most towns, there only 12.6 and 22.2 killometers. Phobos and Deimos's size is so small that it causes their gravity to be weak. Their gravity is so weak that they don't have enough force to pull themselves into a round shape. Phobos is a doomed planet. In about 50 million years it will hit the surface of Mars or be ripped apart. Every hundreds of years it gets about 2 meters closer to the surface of Mars.

Jupiter has 28 moons in its orbit. Jupiter has four inner moons their names are Metis, Abrastea,Amalthea, and Thebe, they were all discovered in 1979. Some of Jupiter's planets are so small they were probably once asteroids going to close to Jupiter. One of Jupiter's moons (IO) looks like a painting with paint splashed all over it. A normal human would never live very long on this large world.

Uranus has 21 moons, five of them are large, and the rest are small. Most of the small moons are probably captured asteroids. One of Uranus's moons (Miranda) looks as red orange as the sun but smaller and not as hot. There are 6 moons that have recently been discovered. Out of all the 21 moons 10 were found in 1986.

Saturn has 30 moons, 6 of Saturn's moons were found in 1980, one of the moon's names is Helene. One of Saturns moons (Enceladus) looks smooth on the surface but with ripples. Enceladus is the second brightest object in the solar system, besides the sun.

Neptune has 8 moons, one of the moons name is Despina. Out of Neptunes 8 moons 7 are small and 1 is large (Trinton),which is almost as large as our own Earth. There was 4 of Neptune's moons found in 1989.

Pluto has 1 moon just like the Earth, the moon's name is name is Charon. Charon's orbit takes about one Pluto day to do a complete revolution. Charon is about half Pluto's size. Charon was discovered by Jim Christy in 1978.
