Animals in Space
by George

There have been many animals in space and if it weren't for them astronauts wouldn't be where they are right now. If it weren't for them astronauts would not be going into space and finding all this information.

Fruit Flies

The first animals in space were fruit flies which were sent with corn seeds. The purpose of the flight was to explore the effects of radiation of high altitudes. It was launched in mid July,1946 in a V-2 rocket.

Laika

Laika was the first mammal in space. She was launched aboard Sputnik 2 on November 3,1957. Laika died of fright just after take off. A message from Laika was received 45 years and five hours to late. Message was receive 45 years after take off at the World Space Congress in Houston that Laika died of fright right after take off.

Belka and Strelka

Belka and Strelka were launched on August 19, 1960, aboard Sputnik 5 and aboard with then were 40 mice, 2 rats, and some plants. They spent 1 day in orbit. Strelka gave birth to six puppies and one was given as a present to John F. Kennedy's daughter. Belka and Strelka were the first animals to survive orbital flight.

Chernuska

Chernuska was launched aboard Sputnik 9 on March 9,1961. She went into space with a dummy cosmonaut, a few mice and a guinea pig. Chernuska was a chimpanzee.

Gordo

The U.S Army launched a squirrel monkey named Gordo on December 13,1958, aboard JUPITER AM-13. The Army and Navy collected useful data for medical research on manned space flights. Gordo could not survive because of the failure of the rocket's nose cone.

Abel and Baker

Abel and Baker were launched in the nose cone of JUPITER missle AM-18 on May 28, 1959. This flight was the first successful flight recorded with animals aboard a spaceship.

Sam

Sam was launched into space aboard the first Little Joe animal flight on December 4,1959, at 11:15 p.m. from Wallops Island, Virginia. It was the second successful flight recorded. Sam was launched aboard the second and last Little Joe animal flight on January 21, 1960.The purpose of the flight was to test the escape system that would later be used in manned flight. She was recovered in the Atlantic Ocean 12 miles off shore by a Marine helicopter.

Ham

Ham was carried into space aboard MERCURY-REDSTONE 2. The purpose of the flight was to test the capabilities of the MERCURY capsule's systems in a space enviroment. Ham survived the mission safely.

Enos

Enos was launched on November 19,1961 from Kennedy Space Center. He was aboard of MERCURY Atlas 5. He was launched into orbit and completed his first orbit in 1 hour and 28.5 minutes. He was supposed to complete 3 orbits but was brought back after the second orbit. When Enos landed he jumped for joy around the deck of the recovery ship enthusiastically shaking the hands of his rescuers.

Albert ll

Albert ll was in a U.S launched V-2 became the first monkey in space on June 14,1949. Albert ll died on impact after a parachute failure  .

Throughout all of this I learned that they sent 13 Russian dogs into space. There names are Laika, Bars, Lisichka, Belka, Strelka, Pchelka, Mushka, Damka, Krosavka, Chernuska, Zvezdochka, Veterok, and Ugolyok. The five dogs that died at flight were Laika, Bars, Lisichka, Pchelka, and Mushka.
