Biography of Dr. Joe Ward

Dr. Joe Ward has been a volunteer for many years working with students at Health Careers High School where he also teaches an independent studies statistics course for credit. In 1997, Dr. Ward was named Northside's Outstanding Intergenerational Volunteer. Ward has also been recognized by the State Board of Education as a Hero for Children. Dr. Ward has provided valuable assistance to students and teachers in their efforts to use statistics and computers in research. He has encouraged and assisted teachers in introducing Advanced Placement Statistics courses into the curriculum. Ward Elementary School will be located outside of 1604 on Shaenfield Road, and should relieve Burke, Galm, Knowlton and Nichols elementary schools.

In 1931, Dr. Ward was already a "Wrangler". 

 


Dr. Ward started playing football at
Ben Franklin Elementary.

Dr. Ward played basketball at Edison High School where he
graduated in 1943.

Austin in 1945.


Dr. Ward was in the United States Navy in the V-12 Electrical Engineer Program. This photo was taken in 1945.

Dr. Ward and Bettie Branson married in August, 1949.

Dr. and Mrs. Ward have two sons - Bradley and Kent.

In 1957, Dr. Ward taught an Introduction to Computers class.

From 1969-1980 Dr. Ward coached Youth Basketball in the YMCA Program. In 1994, he received a Volunteer Leadership Award.

Dr. and Mrs. Ward celebrated their fiftieth anniversary in 1999 and this picture was taken of the family that year.

Each year, Dr. Ward, Brad and Kent play basketball at the YMCA on Dr. Ward's birthday, while Bettie looks on.

In 2006, Dr. Joe Ward was awarded The American Statistical Association's Founders Award
for his excellent efforts in K-12 education and for having an elementary school named after him; distinguished service to the association; and for
his lasting efforts to make statistics understandable to the general population.
