Students learn what it takes to solve real crimes in San Antonio.
|
To begin the 8th
grade Forensics Unit, Mrs. Malik and Ms. Billingsley invited Officer
Angela Salvatierra from the S.A.P.D. Crime Scene
Unit to
speak to our 8th grade TIPS students about “A typical day in the
life of a forensics officer." Officer Salvatierra explained the
types of evidence collected
at a crime scene, such as hair, fiber, and blood samples. She then explained
the importance of carefully packing evidence before sending
it off to the
lab for further inspection. Students were given a lesson
on dusting and lifting
fingerprints from classroom objects and were then given an inside
look into Salvatierra’s mobile office with its fascinating
equipment. Finally, a variety of careers in the field of forensic
science were discussed. Needless
to say, this was a truly unique
experience for the students and one they won't soon forget.
