Read 180 Program

Read 180 is an intensive reading intervention program designed to meet the needs of students who are reading two or more years below grade level. The program is also and effective intervention for students who are dyslexic. The program targets students' individual needs using computer software, high-interest literature and direct instruction in reading skills.

The areas of skills instruction that the program addresses are phonics, decoding, spelling, vocabulary, comprehension strategies, reading fluency and forms of writing.

"dive into" reading

Students enrolled in Read 180 attend class daily. A typical class period begins with the teacher providing direct skills instruction to the whole class for about ten minutes. After direct instruction, the students break into small groups. They begin small group rotations.

The students will spend time with the teacher for small group direct instruction then move to the computer station where they use the Read 180 software to practice their reading skills

independently. The final station allows students to independently read paperback books and listen to books on tape. The last few minutes of the class period the whole group of students again meets with the teacher for more direct instruction.

Sixth and seventh graders who are enrolled in Read 180 also attend a regular reading class to ensure that they become successful readers.
