Staff Development Classes are provided for staff members to increase their knowledge of these and other software applications. There are basically two types of classes: Level 1 - Learning the software as a tool. For instance, learning how to use Word or PowerPoint. This is an in-depth look at the main features of the software, shortcuts and practical applications for teachers and staff. Level 2 - Using the available software to integrate technology into the curriculum. This includes student research and creation of a project, either as part of a group or individually. The idea behind such projects is to promote higher level thinking skills. Students and teachers learn valuable research skills, how to find reliable resources on the Net, Fair Use Policy and citing sources. They may be asked to contact experts on a given field. Then students synthesize a product that might take a stance on a controversial issue, such as global warming, recycling or urban sprawl. Finally, students are asked to present their findings and opinions on their topic. |
