Hi! My name is Angela Birmingham and I am the new MVE librarian.

This year starts my 18th year in education. I taught in the classroom for 13 years (K, 1, 2 and 5th) and was the librarian at Franklin ES (SAISD) for 4 years. I have certifications in: Early Childhood, ESL, General Pk-6th and Library Science. I have a Bachelor's degree in Education from Texas State University and a Master's in Library Science from Sam Houston State University.

I look forward to working with you.

A New Start to a New School Year

September was a great month because we got to come back into the library! We were also able to start using some of our wonderful new furniture, which included new tables and chairs, couches a new rug and some new shelving units. We are waiting to have some of our old shelving units removed and when we do, we'll really get going with our new and improved space.

Some of the things we did included: Library Orientation, learning about the online catalog, the Shelf Marker Hokey Pokey, How to Take of Books with Mr. Wiggles a reader's theater group and reading groups. Each of these activities helped our students become more familiar with our library and how to use it.

Scholastic Book Fair is Coming

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming October 22nd-October 29th. The school website is up and running. You can buy online starting October 22nd and it runs up until November 4th.

highly encourage all students to look into getting an e-wallet account with Scholastic. It eliminates the need for bringing in paper money and coins. What you do is sign-up, add your funds, print up your voucher and bring it to the fair. No money will be handled or lost. This means, no hassle with change, no germy money to handle and less worry about keeping up with coins and paper money.

Check out the links below to see our flyer and the book trailers set to come to our fair this coming month.

SORA Book Challenge

This year we are still doing the Northside reads for 21 in 2021. There is a SORA reading challenge that ends in October. The aim is to read for 441 minutes (21 days) for a chance to win a Samsun tablet. When you have met the challenge you can show me (Ms. Birmingham) that you reached that goal or you can send me a screenshot through email (angela.birmingham@nisd.net) and then I will help you fill out the form for a chance to win.

It's pretty simple-----go to SORA (found in our library catalog Destiny)------read whatever you would like -----check your "me," button within SORA and it tells you your minutes read, books read and other stats. This is what you'll send me a screenshot of or show me in the library. That's it.
