Jaime Frias, a Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher at Communications Arts HS, was named the 2019-2020 EXCEL Award winner for Northside ISD. The announcement was a surprise to Frias, who was told to bring her students to a campus-wide assembly.
The band played, the cheerleaders performed, and Principal Lisa Baker introduced Sarah Forgany, KENS 5 morning anchor who explained the real reason they were at the campus.
Farias is in her 20th year in NISD, starting in 1999 at Neff MS as a Theater Arts teacher. Since then, she has taught at O’Connor HS and Briscoe MS before transferring to Communications Arts HS in 2016. She currently teaches OnRamps Arts and Entertainment and Communications Applications, as well as serves as Department Coordinator.
A poster on the front of her classroom door reflects a favorite quote that she says expresses her teaching philosophy, “Acceptance is seeing with your heart, and not with your eyes.”
“I’m overwhelmed,” Frias said after she realized it was her name that Forgany had just announced. “I am speechless, which is probably a surprise to my students. I love my job, I love my students, I just try to do my best and give back to a profession that has been so good me.”
The EXCEL Award is given to outstanding teachers in San Antonio by KENS 5 TV and Credit Human representatives, who joined the assembly and presented Frias with a silver apple and a $1,000 check.
