Two NISD Academic Decathlon teams advanced to state after competing against more than 30 teams from across the region at the Regional Academic Decathlon hosted at Warren HS.
Competing in the large school category, overall winners at the Regional Competition were Marshall HS, 1st place; and Warren HS, 2nd place.
In addition, Marshall HS is currently ranked second in the state based on their regional competition scores.
Health Careers, O’Connor, and Brandeis high schools came in third, fourth, and fifth respectively.
The Academic Decathlon promotes student achievement by providing a format in which high school students compete in various academic areas. In addition to a seven-minute interview, a one-hour essay, and two speeches, written comprehensive exams are given in music, art, language/literature, mathematics, economics, social science, and science.
Students also participate in the Super Quiz Relay. Winners in the large school category were Marshall HS, first; Warren HS, second, and Health Careers HS, third.
Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded for individual and total scores.
Receiving highest scoring individual awards were in the Honors category, Devin Geelhoed, Abigail Ostmo, and Cassandra Varga, Marshall HS; Sebastian Garcia, O’Connor HS; and Alexander Bush, Warren HS; Scholastic category, Kenton Romero, Collin Ward, and Adrianna Vela, Marshall HS; and Johnathan Stanley and Kjirtina Walker, Warren HS; and Varsity category, Elisa Lopez and Robert Gil, Marshall HS; Drew Taylor and Shawn Henrickson, Warren HS; and Rachel Haga, Clark HS.
Teams advancing from region competition will compete at the Texas Academic Decathlon on March 7-10 in San Antonio.
