Please read and/or watch the following message from Dr. Woods to Northside ISD families.
It has been a challenging school year and that was magnified recently with severe winter weather. However, we are planning for the last grading cycle of the current year and are far along in our planning for summer programming and the 2021-22 school year.
With regard to the last quarter of this year, we are not going to send you a survey, as we have in the past, but want you to know that you have options to help your child finish strong this year. If they are struggling in any way, there is help and resources available. Keep encouraging them to do their best and remain engaged every day until the year ends in early June.
We have been studying the data and know that the vast majority of our students are better served by in-person learning. As of the end of the first semester, seventy percent of the students failing courses right now are virtual learners.
If you would like your child to return to the building to finish the year, please contact your campus. Our campuses will also be reaching out to families of struggling learners directly and encouraging you to return to the school.
We will also change our high school schedule for in-person learners this last grading cycle. There will no longer be a hybrid model and high school students will attend classes on campus every day of the week.
In regards to the Governor’s announcement earlier this week and then the updated guidance from the Texas Education Agency - the safety protocols in place in Northside will remain in place for the remainder of the school year. To be clear, this includes the requirement of face masks for students, staff, and visitors.
We have confidence in these protocols and have seen improving health metrics in our city which is why we offer this option to return to in-person learning as campus capacity allows.
It is also time for something we do annually which is data verification. When we return from Spring Break, you will be asked to log in to the HAC system and ensure that your contact information is up to date. Items like your email address and phone number. The window to complete this process is March 25- April 16. We use this information to communicate with our families and we don’t want you to miss anything about summer offerings and/or news regarding the 2021-22 school year.
Our District staff is planning for the school year that begins in August 2021. We have learned a lot from this school year and next year will look different.
In particular, virtual learning will look very different. It is not going to be a fit for everyone. There will be criteria to be eligible, select courses will be available, and the schedule will mirror the in-person school day with increased synchronous learning time and higher expectations for participation and engagement.
As I said earlier, the data in the District and from the state indicates that students generally perform better academically when they are in-person.
We want to ensure the academic success of all of our students and for the most part, that means attending in person.
Later this spring, we’ll be sharing more detailed information about what instruction will look like next year but I want you to be prepared to have conversations with your school and within your family.

Ha sido un año escolar muy difícil y fue magnificado recientemente con la tormenta invernal. Sin embargo, estamos planeando el último ciclo de calificaciones del año y estamos muy avanzados en nuestra planificación para la programación de verano y del año escolar 2021-22.
Con respecto al último trimestre de este año, no le enviaremos una encuesta, como lo hicimos en el pasado, pero queremos que sepa que tiene opciones para ayudar a su hijo a terminar bien este año. Si están de alguna manera teniendo dificultades, hay ayuda y recursos disponibles. Continúe alentandolos a que hagan lo mejor que puedan y permanezcan comprometidos todos los días hasta que termine el año a principios de junio.
Hemos estado estudiando los datos y sabemos que la gran mayoría de nuestros estudiantes están mejor atendidos por el aprendizaje en persona. Al final del primer semestre, el setenta por ciento de los estudiantes que reprobaron cursos eran estudiantes virtuales.
Si desea que su hijo regrese en persona para terminar el año, comuníquese con su escuela. Nuestras escuelas también se comunicarán directamente con las familias de los estudiantes con dificultades y los alentarán a que regresen a la escuela.
También cambiaremos nuestro horario de la escuela secundaria para los estudiantes en persona en este último ciclo de calificaciones. Ya no habrá un modelo híbrido y los estudiantes de secundaria asistirán a clases en persona todos los días de la semana.
Con respecto al anuncio del gobernador a principios de esta semana y luego a la guía actualizada de la Agencia de Educación de Texas, los protocolos de seguridad en Northside permanecerán vigentes durante el resto del año escolar. Para ser claros, esto incluye el requisito de cubre bocas para los estudiantes, el personal y los visitantes.
Tenemos confianza en estos protocolos y hemos visto mejoras en los índices de salud en nuestra ciudad, por lo que ofrecemos esta opción para volver a la escuela en persona según lo permita la capacidad de la misma.
Les recordamos que llegó la hora de la verificación anual de datos. Cuando regresemos de las vacaciones de primavera, se les pedirá que inicien una sesión en el sistema HAC y se aseguren de que su información de contacto esté actualizada. Elementos como su dirección de correo electrónico y número de teléfono. El tiempo para completar este proceso es del 25 de marzo al 16 de abril. Usamos esta información para comunicarnos con nuestras familias y de esa forma no se pierdan de nada de lo que ofrecemos en el verano y noticias sobre el año escolar 2021-22.
Nuestro personal del distrito está planificando para el año escolar que comienza en agosto de 2021. Hemos aprendido mucho de este año escolar y el próximo año se verá diferente.
En particular, el aprendizaje virtual se verá muy diferente. No va a ser adecuado para todos. Habrá criterios para ser elegible, habrá cursos seleccionados disponibles y el horario reflejará el día escolar en persona con un mayor tiempo de aprendizaje sincrónico y mayores expectativas de participación y compromiso.
Como dije anteriormente, los datos del Distrito y del estado indican que los estudiantes generalmente se desempeñan mejor académicamente cuando están en persona.
Queremos asegurar el éxito académico de todos nuestros estudiantes y en su mayor parte, eso significa asistir en persona.
A finales de esta primavera, compartiremos información más detallada sobre cómo se verá la instrucción el próximo año, pero quiero que estén preparados para tener conversaciones con su escuela y dentro de su familia.
