They are accustomed to playing Bach and Beethoven during more quiet concerts, but more than 1,000 NISD orchestra students will be “rockin’ it out” as world-renowned electric violinist Mark Wood brings his music education program “Electrify Your Strings (EYS)” to NISD.
Organized through SA POWR (San Antonio Parents of Orchestras Who Rock), middle and high school strings students will receive instruction from Wood in the areas of improvisation, composition, and personal expression.  EYS is an intensive rock and roll workshop for school music education departments that boosts student self-esteem and motivation.
“This is an amazing opportunity for orchestra students to step away from the music stand and sheet music, and connect with music and other musicians in a whole new way,” says James Miculka, director of Fine Arts programs in NISD.
A culminating concert will be performed on Saturday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the NISD Sports Gym. Tickets required.

NOTE to Media: Wood will be in town May 15 and 16 and is available to do live or phone interviews at that time. Very visual story:
Large joint rehearsals will be held on May 18 from 1 to 8:30 pm, with the run-through performance on May 19 from 2 to 6 p.m.
