: Elrod student helping community one stitch at a time

A masked hero with a mission with student picture with mask that he made and a comic book type background

What started out as a disappointing time for one elementary school student became a mission to help others.

Mateo Alcorta, a fourth-grade student at Elrod ES, was excited to be seeing his favorite pop group, BTS, in Dallas. When the concert was canceled due to the pandemic, he decided he wanted to make masks for the musicians to keep them safe. That small mission became a bigger one as he learned to sew and crochet. He has since made more than 1,000 masks and distributed throughout the community.

Watch our Video of the Week to learn how this little hero is helping others, one mask at a time.
