Expo of Engaged Learning highlights successes in student engagement

Robotics and 3D printers. Instruments and mobile devices. Northside schools are finding unique ways to engage students in learning and an annual event allows students and teachers to share the successes from their campuses.

The Kelly Smith Expo of Engaged Learning, previously known as Tech Expo, is scheduled for Thursday, May 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Northside Sports Gym, 8400 N. Loop 1604 W. in the Farris Athletic Complex. The event is free and open to the public.

“The Expo of Engaged Learning is the perfect forum for students and teachers to show off how they create, collaborate, communicate, and think critically by inspiring and engaging others in a district-wide event.” says Superintendent Dr. Brian Woods. “I am especially thrilled that our students will take the lead in showcasing the tools they are using to demonstrate knowledge in all subject areas.”

Students from more than 100 elementary, middle and high schools will participate.

Schools will have tables at the Sports Gym and visitors will watch technology demonstrations, robotics demonstrations, and talk to students and teachers in an interactive and informal setting.

Among the topics showcased this year are: mobile devices in the classroom, campus camps and clubs, real world projects, and global learning experiences.

“This year we shifted the focus of this event from technology to student engagement. Technology is a wonderful tool to engage students but we want the focus to be on learning,” says Doug Shudde, Director of Academic Technology and Library & Textbook Services. “Teachers find a multitude of creative ways to engage students in the curriculum and we wanted to be sure the Expo showcases it all.”

Attendees will receive maps of both showcase areas, the gym floor and the upper concourse.

Last year’s event drew more than 1,500 people and participation from 102 schools.
