Franklin ES teacher gives students the space to grow and learn

When you walk into the classroom of April Marie Quintero, a second grade teacher at Franklin Elementary School, you will find both the teacher and the students learning and growing together as a community.

This 2017-18 First Year Educator of the Year understands that students who are actively engaged are learning more while having fun, and she excels at making students feel valued with positive reinforcement.

Students are given the space to express themselves, to be independent learners, and to demonstrate what they’ve learned in a variety of ways including the Seesaw app and plain old construction paper.

Quintero says she is building relationships with her students that will last for years and sacrifices time spent with her family to support students outside the classroom to show them that she cares.

Quintero has known she wanted to be a teacher since childhood. Even though she spent years preparing by honing her skills in high school, college, as a student teacher, and as a substitute teacher, she found out that she got her teaching job only an hour before Meet the Teacher!
