Applications will open at the end of the month for Northside ISD’s newest middle school magnet school. The Zachry Magnet School will welcome 160 students in the inaugural sixth grade class in August 2021. The school’s focus will be the rapidly-growing industries of cybersecurity and information technology along with global communications.
Current fifth graders from Northside elementary schools can apply to attend. The online application will be available beginning Nov. 30 on the Zachry Magnet School website. Applications will be due on Jan. 18, 2021. All qualified students will be placed in a lottery to select 160 students.
Housed at Zachry Middle School, the innovative program will offer advanced Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses and unique English Language Arts (ELA) and Social Studies courses.
Gina Rodriguez, formerly the vice principal at the Northside School of Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship (NSITE), will lead the school as the Academic Dean.
“Zachry Magnet students will explore future career possibilities in industries like cybersecurity and information technology.” Rodriguez said. “We’ll also develop the communication, leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills that will be necessary for any career in our increasingly global world. This strong foundation can then be applied to further study at any NISD high school.”
“We want to develop the next generation of leaders who understand how the world works, how to communicate, and how they can make a difference in our communities.”
In addition to a full range of Pre-AP and GT courses, Zachry Magnet School students will have the opportunity to earn up to three high school credits via the specialty courses designed for the program. Students also have the opportunity to earn additional high school credit in courses like Algebra 1, Spanish, Art 1, or AVID. This will allow them additional flexibility in high school for AP and Dual Credit courses, and internships and externships.
Students will also be able to participate in Zachry Middle School activities including Fine Arts, Athletics, and clubs and organizations.
The District will renovate existing classrooms at Zachry Middle School to accommodate the new magnet program.
Transportation will be provided for eligible students.
The District’s first middle school magnet school, the STEM-focused Jones Magnet School, opened this fall.
