NEF recognizes 2020 Pillars at virtual event; ends year awarding $182,000 to teachers

Despite the pandemic, the Northside Education Foundation (NEF) has pushed past uncertainty to continue its mission, especially as 2020 marked NEF’s 25th anniversary.

NEF hosted its first-ever Virtual Pillar Recognition, using the opportunity to add a conference-style virtual summit leading up to the online gala. The summit allowed event sponsors to engage with NISD leaders and industry peers on topics including a legislative update, information about NISD’s building programs, digitalization of the classroom, how to become a vendor, and COVID-19 initiatives taken by the District.

The gala, which included a discounted rate for NISD employees, students, and families, recognized the seven Pillars of Character, including the first Pillar of Learning. The 2020 Pillars are Diana Ely, Jasmin A. Dean, Julia Barton Murphy, John Picacio, Dr. Alicia Wooten, Dr. Erika Gonzalez, and Lorenzo Gomez III. Proceeds from the event allowed NEF to award 100% of New Teacher Grant applications and fund about $175,000 in NEF Innovation grants. This week, 69 new NISD teachers were surprised virtually with $100 New Teacher Grants from NEF.

The NEF Fall and Spring Innovation Grant winners will be announced and recognized after the winter break.

All NISD employees can apply for NEF Grants here. The NEF Team Grant application deadline is Jan. 21, and the NEF Resource Grant application deadline is Jan. 28.
