Twenty three NISD seventh grade students were recently recognized among the Top 40 winners in the 2019 Texas Proud Essay Contest, including second place winner Grace Saenz of Jefferson Middle School.
Saenz had the opportunity to read her essay at a ceremony at the Alamo. Her teacher is Christine Schroeder.
Other students recognized in the top 10 for their essays were – Malachi Corrales, Rayburn Middle School, 8th place; Eliana Howard, Jefferson Middle School, 9th place; and Jose Aguirre, Rayburn Middle School, 10th place.
The essay contest is sponsored by the Alamo Chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas and is an effort to keep the memory of the defenders of the Alamo alive. More than 2,900 students from across San Antonio submitted a letter written from the point of view of an Alamo defender during the final days of the Alamo siege. Letters were judged by members of the Sons of the Republic and area historians on historical accuracy and creativity, and connection to the experiences the defenders must have witnessed.
The Alamo chapter also made donations to the 7th grade history departments of participating middle schools.
