Schools may be closed but online registration for Pre-kindergarten students in Northside ISD opens on May 1. Campuses will work with families to complete the Pre-K qualification process virtually starting May 4.

To qualify, a child must be four-years-old on or before Sept. 1. They also must be one of the following: educationally disadvantaged (income eligible), a limited English speaker, homeless, under the care of DPS/Foster Care, a child of an active duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces, the child of a family member that was killed or injured during active military duty, or the child of a person eligible for the Star of Texas award.

Those registering should upload the following required documents to establish qualifications: students’ birth certificate, proof of address (such as a current utility, home phone, or cable bill), immunization records, photo ID of parent, and social security card (optional). 

Pre-Kindergarten classes are offered at 70 elementary schools around the district for either half-day or full-day. NISD will review space availability and consider offering a tuition-based Pre-K program later this summer. 

Studies have found that children who attended high-quality Pre-K programs were less likely to be placed in special education, less likely to be retained in a grade, and more likely to graduate from high school than peers who did not attend such programs. The early years are critical in laying the groundwork for literacy learning.
