Here is a roundup of Veterans Days activities planned at several Northside ISD schools on Friday, Nov. 9 and Monday, Nov. 12.
Friday, Nov. 9
Briscoe Middle School and Hoffmann Elementary School
When: Nov. 9, 8:45 a.m. (breakfast for military guests at 8 a.m.)
Where: Briscoe MS cafeteria, 4265 Lone Star Parkway, 78253
The annual Briscoe/Hoffmann Veterans Day ceremony has moved inside to the Briscoe cafeteria due to anticipated poor weather on Friday morning. Music will be provided by the Briscoe band and Hoffmann and Briscoe choirs. Special guest speaker is Colonel Melchizedek “Kato” T. Martinez, currently assigned to Joint Base San Antonio, Randolph Air Force Base. Students at Hoffmann Elementary School will watch a live stream of the event from their classrooms.
Jay High School
When: Nov. 9, 10:40 a.m.
Where: 7611 Marbach Road, 78227, auditorium
The Jay High School TX-782nd AF JROTC is hosting a Veterans Day Reveille Ceremony. In addition, the Silver Eagles and SNAP II drill teams will perform at the Lopez Senior Center (9 a.m.), Blue Skies Retirement Home (11 a.m.) and Morningside Ministries Nursing Home (2 p.m.) throughout the day.
Leon Valley Elementary School
When: Nov. 9, 8 a.m.
Where: 7111 Huebner Road, 78240
The Leon Valley Elementary School Veterans Day ceremony will include performances from the Marshall High School jazz band and choir along with the Leon Valley choir. American Legion Post 336 will post the colors and participate in the ceremony. Invited guests include Northside and City of Leon Valley officials and residents of a senior care facility. Following the ceremony, veterans and their families are invited to a breakfast provided by donations from Leon Valley businesses.
Northside School Museum Association
When: Nov. 9, 10 a.m.
Where: 6632 Bandera Road, Building F, flagpole
The Northside Museum Association Veterans Day celebration will include a flag-raising by the Holmes HS AF JROTC and music from Marshall HS students. Guest speaker is Brigadier General (Air Force retired) Jeff Kendall, a decorated combat veteran and fighter pilot. He commanded over 30,000 personnel from 42 nations during Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Southern Watch, and Enduring Freedom.
Zachry Middle School
When: Nov. 9, 8:45 a.m.
Where: 9410 Timber Path, 78250, football field
The Zachry Middle School Veterans Day ceremony will include the color guard from Taft HS AF JROTC and performances from Zachry Fine Arts students.
Monday, Nov. 12
Aue Elementary School
When: Nov. 12, 9 a.m.
Where: 24750 Baywater Stage, 78255, cafeteria
The Aue choir will perform at their ceremony in the cafeteria and a guest speaker, retired Colonel Worthey Brisco, will address the students and staff. The school will host veterans in the library for refreshments before the ceremony. The school has also created a Military Wall of Honor in the foyer and students, staff, and guests are all asked to wear patriotic attire.
Brandeis High School
When: Nov. 12, 8 a.m.
Where: 13011 Kyle Seale Parkway, 78249, flagpole
Each year, Brandeis High School invites veterans who work in Central Office departments to be recognized at their ceremony along with the veterans in their school community. The AFJROTC leads the flag ceremony and the Brandeis Band pays musical tribute to all branches of the military. The school has created a Wall of Honor and will host a breakfast for veterans.
Clark High School
When: Nov. 9, 12, and 13
Clark High School AF JROTC cadets will spend several days supporting school and community events. The Ceremonial Color Guard will attend the Boone Elementary School Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 9 (7:40 a.m.) and present the colors at the Holiday Retirement Community (11 a.m.) and McDermott Elementary School (1:30 p.m.)
On Monday, Nov. 12, the Centurion Guard Drill Team will perform at Leon Springs Elementary School and the Silver Valor Drill Team will perform at Rawlinson Middle School at 7:30 a.m.
On Tuesday, Nov. 13, a Ceremonial Honor Guard will present the colors at Shavano Park Senior Living at 10 a.m.
The Clark High School Choir will perform at the Locke Hill Elementary Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 9 at 8 a.m. They will also perform at Accenture Operations Center on Monday, Nov. 12 at 10 a.m.
Leon Springs Elementary School
When: Monday, Nov. 12, 8 a.m.
Where: 23881 IH 10 W
The Leon Springs Elementary School choir will perform at the school’s ceremony. Special guest speaker is retired Colonel Byron Nash, who daughter teaches third grade at Leon Springs. The Centurion Guard Drill Team from Clark HS will also perform.
O’Connor High School
When: Nov. 12, 8 a.m.
Where: 12221 Leslie Road, 78023, flag pole and auditorium
The O’Connor High School AFJROTC will raise the flags at the school flag pole at 8 a.m. The ceremony begins at 8:10 a.m. in the auditorium with the O’Connor Band playing service songs as veterans are recognized with certificates. There is a reception for veterans in the O’Connor library at 8:35 a.m. The drill team will perform at the Helotes Elementary School Veterans Day ceremony at 8:30 a.m.
On Friday, Nov. 9, cadets will lay a wreath as part of the Brauchle Elementary School Veterans Day ceremony (8 a.m.) and an honor guard will visit Silver Creek Manor Nursing Home (9:30 a.m.).
Ott Elementary School
When: Nov. 12, 8 a.m.
Where: 100 N. Grosenbacher Road, 78253, gym
Ott Elementary School is home to a sizable military population – about 40 percent of students are military affiliated and the school has two Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) grants funding academic and support programs for them. This year’s Veterans Day ceremony includes student-written poetry, essays, and Ott parent veterans as special guest speakers. The Ott Choir will perform the National Anthem and a medley of songs. Veterans will be treated to breakfast from 9 to 10 a.m.
Valley Hi Elementary School
When: Monday, Nov. 12, 9:45 a.m.
Where: 8503 Ray Ellison Blvd., 78227, cafeteria
The Valley Hi Elementary School Veterans Day ceremony will include readings of letters and poems about Veterans Day, songs from students, and the presentation of colors by Boy Scouts. The school will host veterans in the library for lunch after the ceremony. Guest speaker is Frank Johnson, current vice principal at Galm ES and a U.S. Army Captain who has served for 22 years in the Army. Johnson has been deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia and Kosovo and is currently a Medical Operations Officer in the Texas Army National Guard.
