The Limousine Library is at your service at Leon Springs Elementary School. New school librarian Hayley Steinmann joined a campus full of eager readers and wanted to get books in her student’s hands even though they are learning at home.
“I’ve always wanted to be a librarian and walking into it now is definitely nothing like I expected,” Steinmann said. “I’m making the best of the situation to connect with students and parents. You definitely have to be creative.”
That’s certainly the approach she took with the Limousine Library, transforming a standard library cart by adding lights, the painted front of a limo, and a portable speaker for mood music.
Rain or shine, she’s out in front of the school on Wednesday mornings and afternoons complete with a chauffeur hat, gloves, and a bowtie.
“I didn’t want to just leave a cart outside, I wanted to meet them and put faces to names,” Steinmann said. “I see them on Zoom but it’s a little lonely in the library right now.”
After two weeks of service, almost 200 books have gone home with students whose parents drive through the parking lot for curbside check outs. Books are reserved in advance using the Destiny Discover library catalog.
“They’ve been asking for new books, and it’s obvious they miss coming into the library,” Steinmann said.
When a book one first grader wanted was already checked out, Steinmann had multiple options from the same series waiting for him to choose from, all without leaving the car.
Leon Springs students have also been checking out eBooks and audiobooks and participating in library Zoom lessons, but it’s not the same as face-to-face interaction.
“I’ve been waiting to meet them in person and see their personalities,” Steinmann said.
She’s even met some of the family pets along for the ride.
Though she’s a new librarian, Steinmann isn’t new to Northside. She’s been teaching for seven years and came to Leon Springs from Henderson Elementary School where she taught second grade.
