Texas Proud essay winners make Northside Proud

NISD seventh grade students were recently recognized among the Top 10 winners in the citywide 2021 Texas Proud Essay Contest.

Winners include Tess Hornbarger, third place; Joaquin Madrigal, fourth place; and Ainsley Beck, 10th place, all from Folks Middle School.

Their history teachers are Gustavo Miranda, Martin Gaffney, and Mariana Monarrez.

The essay contest is sponsored by the Alamo Chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas and is an effort to keep the memory of the defenders of the Alamo alive. Students from across San Antonio submitted a letter written from the point of view of an Alamo defender during the final days of the Alamo siege. Letters were judged by members of the Sons of the Republic and area historians on historical accuracy and creativity, and connection to the experiences the defenders must have witnessed.

The Alamo chapter also made donations to the seventh grade history departments of participating middle schools.

Third place winner Tess Hornbarger, formerly Folks MS, now Stevenson MS
Fourth place winner Joaquin Madrigal with teacher Martin Gaffney
10th place winner Ainsley Beck with teacher Mariana Monarrez
