World comes together at Colonies North ES for Parade of Nations

Who: Students of Colonies North Elementary School

What: Parade of Nations

When:  Wednesday, Oct. 24, 8:30 a.m.

Where: Colonies North ES (blacktop), 9915 Northampton Drive, 78230

Colonies North ES is home to many refugee and “Newcomer” students. To showcase the cultural diversity of the school, all students attend an annual Parade of Nations. This year, 41 countries will be represented including Afghanistan, India, Iraq, Malaysia, Sudan, Brazil, Congo, Thailand, and many more.

Of the 626 students attending the school this year, 251 are English Language Learners (ELL). There are 36 identified languages spoken at Colonies North. In addition, some students speak more than three languages.

The participants will parade around the blacktop to their national anthem while carrying the country’s flag. (Imagine the Opening Ceremonies of each Olympic games.) The last country in the parade will be the United States. Students will also share facts about their native countries.

The school choir will sing “Together We Can Change the World,” always an emotional piece to the parade.

(Note: the event moves into the gymnasium in case of rain.)
