What: NISD schools participate in Hour of Code as part of Computer Science Education Week
When: Monday, Dec. 9 from 9-11 a.m.
Where: Zachry Middle School, 9410 Timber Path
Note: Other NISD schools will be participating in Hour of Code throughout the week (Dec. 9-14).
Elementary and middle school students across the district will be participating in “Hour of Code” as a way to introduce students to computer science and computer programming.
“In NISD, ‘Hour of Code’ is also a way to introduce students to potential career areas in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields,” says Matthew Garrett, Academic Technology Coordinator.
'Hour of Code™' is a global initiative by Computer Science Education Week [csedweek.org] and Code.org [code.org] to introduce millions of students in 180+ countries through a one-hour introduction to computer science and computer programming.
Volunteers will also be visiting various NISD campuses for Hour of Code including members from the District’s Technology Services Department and corporate partners.
USAA volunteers will visit five NISD schools (Allen, Colonies North, Glenoaks, and Murnin elementary schools along with Zachry MS) to show students career opportunities using coding and how coding can be applied in their lives at this level.
More than 2,500 students will be participating districtwide.
Interest in coding is increasing, and currently, Coding Clubs are at about half of NISD’s elementary campuses with a goal of having them at all campuses within the next year or two.
If interested in attending - and maybe even learning some coding from a student - please let us know if possible so we can assist with potential interviews
