In Northside, we follow a balanced literacy framework that includes the explicit and systematic teaching of foundational literacy skills. The instructional components within our balanced literacy framework promote the gradual release of responsibility from teacher to student. Our students engage in literacy learning during read alouds of mentor texts, shared and performance reading/writing, mini lessons, small group instruction, and independent reading/writing.
Reading Langauge Arts at Ward ES
Literature is used to determine word meaning through contextual and structural analysis. Comprehension will be developed through vocabulary, fluency, main idea, supporting facts and details, sequence, inquiry, story elements, point of view, compare/contrast, research, drawing conclusions, etc. In writing students learn the necessary composition skills to organize and articulate their thoughts. Spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and Parts of Speech are emphasized in all subject areas. Projects are designed to strengthen research, presentation, and listening skills.
