Applications open at the end of November for Northside ISD’s two middle school magnet programs – the STEM-focused Jones Magnet School and the new Zachry Magnet School which opens next fall with an emphasis on global communications, information technology, and cybersecurity.
Each magnet program offers students smaller class sizes, unique and advanced courses, leadership and enrichment experiences, and an early opportunity to earn high school credit.
Both schools operate as a school-within-a-school, which allows students to participate in Fine Arts programs like Band, Choir and Orchestra, Athletics, and clubs and organizations on the Jones and Zachry campuses.
All current fifth graders are eligible to apply. Enrollment is limited at each school and all qualified students will be placed in a lottery. Transportation will be provided for eligible students.
Applications will be available on each school’s website starting Nov. 30 and are due Jan. 18, 2021. The application includes short response questions and contact information that must both be completed. It will be available in English and Spanish.
Anyone needing assistance with an application should contact their elementary school counselor.

Zachry Magnet School:
Zachry Magnet School is Northside ISD’s newest middle school magnet program, opening in the fall of 2021 at Zachry Middle School. One hundred and sixty students will be admitted in the inaugural class. Their mission is to develop global leaders in cybersecurity, one of the fastest growing career fields in the country.
Students will take unique English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Career and Technical Education courses focused on information technology, cybersecurity, and global communication. When they leave Zachry Magnet School, students will be able to continue this field of study at the NISD high schools that offer cybersecurity and web development.
The ideal Zachry Magnet student is technology driven, likes to communicate, debate, and collaborate in a variety of ways, is curious about the world around them, and is interested in exploring cultures and people.
Jones Magnet School:
Jones Magnet School opened in the fall of 2020 on the Jones Middle School campus, offering students advanced academic courses in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The school will welcome 140 sixth graders each year. Upon successful completion of the Jones Magnet School, students will earn automatic acceptance to the Jay Science and Engineering Academy.
The District is currently renovating existing classrooms at Jones to accommodate larger, customized math and science classrooms, group learning centers, and space for 3D printers, robotics and engineering labs, and maker spaces. Construction will be completed in spring 2021.
The ideal Jones Magnet student likes to tinker, take apart, and build. They enjoy patterns, puzzles, and discovering how things work. They’re problem-solvers, critical thinkers, and willing to take risks as part of the engineering design process.
Students at Jones Magnet adhere to a uniform dress policy.
