Dr. Jeannie Von Stultz presented a program on "Children's Mental Health." Bills filed related to health in the 81st legislative session were discussed in possible relevancy to Northside ISD.
Information was provided regarding the Teen Dating Violence Program, the SOFIT Assessment Program, Intramurals, Motor Labs, the P.A.P.A. program, etc. Goal development was discussed.
Kim Burke, Safe and Drug Free School Coordinator, presented Northside's results on the Texas School Survey of Substance Abuse.
Fitness reporting to TEA was reviewed by Paul Tucker. Discussion was held about revising SHAC goals.
The Northside Fitness Medical Exemption Form was reviewed and discussed. The Sexuality Education Subcommittee was formed.
The PEP No Cost Extension was discussed. Julie Eversole reviewed the SALI Action Planning. Paul Tucker reviewed the HEB Health and Wellness Project.
The Parenting and Paternity Awareness (P.A.P.A.) was discussed. Information was provided about the On-Line Health Course for A.V.I.D. students.
Information was provided by Bev Linkmeyer regarding the implementation of the Northside Fitness Team to test high school students who are not in PE. This is in compliance with SB 530. The Texas Now Fitness Grant, awarded to three middle schools, was reviewed.
The 4th grade film on menstruation was presented and approved by the Council.
Council reviewed and approved the Human Sexuality Videos for use in Family and Consumer Sciences classes in high school. The Parent Recruitment Application was discussed and revised.
Marcy Andrade-Krasiewski presented the Project Measure Up program. Lisa Delgado provided information form the Bexar County Teen Pregnancy Conference. Implementation of SB 530 was discussed.
Updates were provided for SB 530 and 42. District CPR and AED regulations were reviewed.
The SALI goals were presented. The North East ISD Connections Program was presented.
Senate Bill 530, filed by Senator Nelson, was reported to the Council. Goals were set for the year.
Council heard the following legislative reports: Senate Bill 19, 1357, 42. SB 19 and 1357 expanded the role of the SHAC.
A 2nd draft of the School Wellness Policy was reviewed by the Council. The hearing at the State Board of Education on Senate Bill 42 was discussed.
The acquisition of new health textbooks was discussed. The Council worked on the School Wellness Policy.
Council reviewed the Local Wellness Policy sub committees work. Plans are to submit a first draft of the policy by January 26, 2006
Carol Rippa, Director of Food Services, reviewed School Local Wellness Policy to be developed during the 2005-2006 school year. The Guidance and Counseling Program was reviewed.
Rudy Sanchez presented on the Training Institute in Sexual Health Education. Senate Bill 42 and the PEP grant was discussed. The Texas Public School Nutrition Policy was reviewed.
A presentation for the Northside Safe and Drug free School was provided. Suzanne Levan provided an Employee Wellness update.
Discussions were held about the state not funding the health textbooks.
The S.T.E.P.S. Grant was reviewed by Alison Kushnerick.
Victor Robledo, representing CPS Energy presented a program called, "Yourth Safety Seminar"
Discussions were held about the implementation of Choosing the Best PATH at the schools.
Mary Wynn presented information on health lessons that are being presented by Health Science Center students at some Northside elementary schools.
Shirley Schreiber and Dr. Mangos reviewed the Northside ISD Air Quality Alert Regulations. Dr. Mangos gave in-depth information on the nature of ozone and the serious affects on children.
Suzanne Levan reported on the results of the School Health Index Assessment. Discussions were held about how important this data will be for the SHAC for the future.
Discussions were held about recruiting parents through the principals and the PTA Council.
The Council was given the names of the health textbooks that were selected by the teachers. They include:
Choosing the Best PATH dates were given including parent training, parent previews, and dates for instruction.
The CDC School Health Index was discussed by Suzanne Levan. The NISD Wellness Representatives are completing the index with assistance from various staff members at their respective schools.
An update was given regarding training that has been arranged for Choosing the Best PATH on February 2nd and 3rd.
The Council made recommendations for health textbooks that had been reviewed by members. These were passed along to the teachers who will be voting.
The SHAC recommendation to teach Choosing the Best PATH to 8th grade students at all middle schools was presented to the School Board. Approval was unanimous.
Members revised the Operational Guidelines and the 3 Year Action Plan. Discussions were held about options for systematic parent recruitment.
Information about Choosing the Best PATH was reviewed including presentations to NEIC, the Middle School Principals, and the Academics Committee of the School Board.
The STEPS (School Health Leadership Initiatives) was presented.
Council members worked on SHAC Operational Guidelines and a 3 Year Action Plan. Information about the upcoming health textbook adoption was reviewed.
Council members participated in a Saturday retreat from 8:30-1:30. State guidelines were reviewed as well as District initiatives related to health. Linda Seewald was appointed chair.
Chair reported Board approval of Health Textbooks recommended by the SHAC and NISD Health Textbook Committee. Sexuality education discussed.
School Health Advisory Council is an advisory group of individuals who represent segments of the community. The group acts collectively to provide advice and to make recommendations to the school system on various aspects of school health.
Prior to 2004, the Northside School Health Advisory Council met approximately four times per year and focused on approving sexuality education materials. Beginning in 2004, the Council expanded to address all Health concerns within the school and community.
