Individual Planning
Since children may experience a variety of concerns at different developmental stages, Krueger's Guidance Program offers many services that assist students in acquiring knowledge and skills necessary for healthy development. Through this continuum of services, the Guidance Department recognizes that parents, school personnel and the community each have important roles to play and valuable resources to contribute in assisting students with their development. Guidance and counseling services are offered for all children in grades K-5.

The guidance and counseling program at Krueger Elementary is designed to be preventative as well as developmental.

The counselor at Krueger works with students in three different settings:

    1. Students receive classroom guidance lessons with their whole class approximately once every six school days.

    2. The counselor teaches specific skills in small groups of approximately 5-8 students. These groups meet during the school day, for 30 minutes once a week, for approximately five sessions.

    3. Individual students are seen by the counselor when they have a concern that may be interfering with their ability to learn or concentrate on school work. An appointment can be made to see the counselor by the student, the student's teacher, or the student's parent.

Guidance Classesc

The student curriculum at Krueger Elementary includes guidance classes with the counselor. Guidance classes are a part of Northside's comprehensive Guidance Program in which the counselor teaches children skills to enrich their educational and social lives. These skills are taught to entire classes several times per month. The guidance curriculum is intended to support the objectives of academic instruction and to help children develop their full educational potential through general skills and strategies.  Parents are invited to visit the counselor's office during Open House, or by appointment, to preview the materials that are used.

Examples of guidance lesson topics:

Responsible Behavior
Goal Setting
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Drug Awareness/prevention
Self Esteem Development
Conflict Resolution Skills
Communication Skills
Respecting Cultural Heritage and Differences
Decision Making and Problem Solving
Career Awareness

Small Group Counseling

Two types of small group counseling are offered for Krueger students. The first type, developmental groups, addresses normal developmental tasks and topics such as social skills, time management, or organizational skills. **We emphasize to students and parents that these groups are for everyone, and participation does not indicate a problem.

The second type of small group counseling, special concerns groups, focuses on specific needs. These group sessions are attended by students that share a common concern. Some examples of participants for these groups might be students whose parents are separated or divorced, students who have to cope with the illness or death of a family member, or students with other specific needs.

Listed below are possible topics for our special concerns groups:

Adopted Children                                   Accepting Grief and Loss
Divorce/Blended Families                       Building Self Confidence
Substance Abuse in Families                   Understanding ADD/ADHD
Military Parent(s)                                  Coping with Stress

Goal Setting

The NISD Goal-Setting Program is designed for students to set, implement, and evaluate personal goals related to learning, service, and/or responsibility. It is organized around the ten-step goal setting process and is implemented through instructional and advisory programs by trained educators with the support of parents, community members, trained staff, and peers.

The Advisory Program

The Northside Independent School District Advisory Program, an integral component of the Pre K-12 educational program, enables students to belong and contribute to a community, apply the goal-setting process, and develop academic, personal, social, and career competence. Students meet in small groups on a weekly basis with trained, caring advisors who are in partnership with parents to personally assist students.
