Library of Congress - Images, documents, recordings, and movies from American history. Use their search engine or check out the special collections for the Civil War and American Presidents.
National Archives Digital Classroom - a wonderful set of lesson plans, arranged by historical era, which include reproducible copies of many primary documents held by the US National Archives and Records Administration.
Our Documents - links to 100+ important U.S. documents, in their original hand-written form; this site also includes tips for teachers on how to use these items in their curriculum and links to more information on the items.
History Channel - Great features like "This Day in History" where you can find out newsworthy events that happened on this day in the past.  Kids could check this out on their birthdays and share with the class.  They also have a "Speeches" section where you can find and listen to almost any famous speech.
