Purpose:
An Ott Elementary School Reading Program

Grades 2-5: The purpose of the TicTacToe Reading Program is to encourage independent reading in many genres while providing the student with some responsibility for its completion. It includes a set of Connection Activities for reading/writing and technology from which the student will choose when a book is completed. These Connection Activities are designed to provide differentiation for learning abilities and interests of the students. Students are allowed to choose the Connection Activity they want to complete rather than it being assigned to them. Books should be on the student's reading level or slightly above to provide a challenge.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade: The purpose of the TicTacToe Reading Program is to provide opportunities for the student to read books independently at home or have books read to them by a parent/guardian at home. The Connection Activities will be completed with parental assistance.

Connection Activities: The Connections are varied and provide choices in either reading/writing or technology. The Connection Activities are posted on the TicTacToe Webpage and can be accessed from school or home. Any handouts required for Connections are also online and can be printed. Although this work may not always receive a grade by the classroom teacher, it will be checked and a participation grade will be given.

Object of the Game: Students fill in a row on their TicTacToe Reading Game Card by reading a book from each of the genres in the row and completing a Connection Activity for this genre. As any row is completed, the student's name will be announced on the Thursday Morning Announcements and the name will be added to the TicTacToe Reading Wall near the cafeteria. A Celebration is held at the end of the year for participants in the TicTacToe Reading Program.
