Scobee Elementary School

FR Scobee Memorial Scholarship for Graduating Seniors of 2024

Dear Seniors and Parents

Scobee Elementary School, which opened in 1987, was the first school named in honor of F.R. "Dick" Scobee, the commander of the Challenger Space Shuttle Crew. Scobee was born on May 19. 1939. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1957 and was stationed at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio. He was accepted as an astronaut candidate by NASA in 1978. He was a pilot on the STS 41-C in 1984, logging a total of 168 hours in space during the mission. He then served as spacecraft commander of the Orbiter Challenger, which exploded during launch from the Kennedy Space Center on January 28, 1986. Scobee was chosen as the school's namesake not only because he was a hero who challenged us to "reach for the stars," but also because of his personal ties to San Antonio.

Scobee Student Council is a group of nominated/elected 4th and 5th grade students who have shown exemplary leadership on their campus and who have a desire to give back to their community. Each year, the Student Council raises money through various fundraisers through t the year. They vote on how to use their money to help others. The Student Council will typically allocate some of their funds for a schoolwide project, some for a community project, and some for a statewide project. This year, the Student Council has decided to use some of their money to fund a scholarship in F.R. Scobee's memory. We hope to have this be an annual scholarship.
