The following individuals have been recognized at an NISD Board of Trustees meeting for state and national achievements.

Outgoing members of the 2010-2011 Administrative Internship Management Class recognized

Members of the 2010-11 Administrative Internship Management (AIM) class were formally recognized by the Board for their accomplishments and presented with Certificates of Completion. The AIM class is a year-long program that identifies and trains current and potential administrators.

Dr. Folks honored for winning Texas Superintendent of the Year

The Board of Trustees officially honored Dr. John Folks for being named the 2011 Texas Superintendent of the Year by the Texas Association of School Boards.

Outgoing SBAC members recognized

Member volunteers of the 2010-11 School Boundary Advisory Committee (SBAC) were formally recognized by the Board for their accomplishments and were presented with certificates of recognition.

Outgoing NEIC members recognized

The Board of Trustees recognized outgoing members of the Northside Educational Improvement Council (NEIC), which includes 19 parents, community members, and business representatives appointed by Board members.

O’Connor swimmer wins silver at Deaf Swimming World Championship

Abby McAlpin, a swimmer from O'Connor HS, participated in the Deaf Swimming World Championship meet in Portugal this summer.

School nurses save lives of student and father

Late last school year, in two separate incidents, the expertise and poise of two NISD school nurses saved the lives of a student and a father.

Budding composers win money for their schools

Stevens HS musician Emily Rubio, daughter of Stevens HS band director Robert Rubio, placed second in the 2011 Texas State Farm Original Score Contest with her original composition, "A Texas Portrait."

Rawlinson student represents San Antonio in National Spelling Bee

Abhinav Sangisetti, an eighth grader at Rawlinson MS, was one of 274 students who competed in the national Scripps Spelling Bee in National Harbor, MD. He made it through two rounds of the spelling bee before being disqualified. Sangisetti will be attending Health Careers HS next school year.

National Latin Exam Winners Recognized

The National Latin Exam is a worldwide test given to Latin students. During the first week of March, approximately 137,000 Latin students from the United States and 16 foreign countries participated in the National Latin Exam. The test covers general knowledge of the Latin language, classical mythology, ancient customs, derivatives, and reading comprehension skills. Only 568 students in the world achieved a perfect score, six are from Clark HS, and three are from Health Careers HS.

Texas State JCL Latin Competition Winners recognized

About 2,000 Latin students representing 97 public and private schools from across the State of Texas competed at the Texas State Junior Classical League Latin Competition. The students competed in contests based on their knowledge of the Latin language, ancient history and classical culture. Marshall High School placed 8th and Clark High School placed 1st in the Lower Division Team Sweepstakes. Northside Health Careers High School placed 1st in the Upper Division Team Sweepstakes.

Students recognized as Governor’s Science & Technology Champions

Governor Rick Perry awarded scholarships to attend a science and engineering academy this summer at the University of Texas at Arlington. Students were selected for the academy based on their performance at the ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair. All four Northside students are from Jay Science and Engineering Academy.

Students recognized as I-SWEEEP Olympiad Winners

Over 1000 students, grades 6-12, were invited to Houston for International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering, Environment) Project Olympiad (also known as I-SWEEEP) competition that concentrates on research into living in sustainable ways. All costs are underwritten by corporate sponsors for students from 43 states and 70 countries to participate.

Students excel at Intel International Science & Engineering Fair

The top projects at the state science fair level and exceptional projects at the regional science fair advance to Intel International Science and Engineering Fair competition (there is no national level). Over 1200 finalists from fifty countries traveled this year to Los Angeles this month to compete for over $3 million in scholarships and prizes.

Students recognized as ExxonMobil Texas Science & Engineering Fair Winners

For the Exxon-Mobile Texas Science & Engineering Fair, Middle and high school students complete independent research projects, and then present their findings on display boards. Teams of judges interview students on their work and results. Students can advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair through this state fair.

Texas Junior Academy of Science Winners Recognized

Texas Junior Academy of Science competition where middle and high school students complete independent research projects, and then share their studies in an oral presentation before a panel of professional scientists who interview the students on their work. Students advance to this state competition at Texas A&M through the Regional Junior Academy of Science competition at UTSA and a formal review of their experimental abstracts.

Track and Fielders recognized for state UIL accomplishments

NISD student athletes qualified for the state track and field meet in their respective events on May 13 and 14 in Austin, Texas. These students represent the finest track and field athletes in Region 4.

O’Connor tennis player best in the state

Mariana (Mahuiyang) Rong from O'Connor High School is the UIL 5A High School Tennis State Champion. She is now the first female athlete to win a state tennis championship for the District, and the first UIL championship for the school. Tennis Coach is Donna Van Auken.

Swimmers and divers recognized as state qualifiers

The UIL High School Swimming and Diving Championship Meet was held on February 18-19. NISD students represented their high schools and NISD at this prestigious competition as they demonstrated great athleticism and character. Congratulations to these students for competing at the highest level in the state of Texas.

Taft HS Boys Basketball team recognized as UIL 5A State Semifinalists

Just like their motto stated, The Taft Boys Basketball team were truly Austin Ready, by having one of the best seasons in school history. They finished with an overall record of 34-6, 29-1 vs All Region 4 opponents and were District Champions, Area Champions, Regional Champions, and State Semifinalist. They finished ranked 4th in the state and were ranked number 1 in the final city rankings. During the season, they also won the San Antonio ISD Tournament and set a school record by winning 22 games in a row. We are extremely proud of the young men and women who helped make this a dream season.

Bowling Club winners recognized as state winners

In only its third year of competition, NISD High School Bowling Club now has teams from each high school. This makes NISD the biggest promoter of High School Bowling in the state of Texas and in the nation.

Elementary students are recognized as River Parade art contest winners

Two student artists recognized for their western art

The annual Western Art Contest and Exhibit recognizes outstanding artists interested in Western Art. The top 50 pieces are exhibited at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. The top 25 pieces are auctioned to the highest bidder, with each student artist receiving the full amount of the winning bid in the form of a college scholarship award. NISD had a top 50 piece that was exhibited and a top 25 piece that was auctioned for a total of $12,500 in scholarship monies.

Carson students recognized as YAM winners

2011 is the 50th year of the Texas Youth Art Month Flag Design Contest and Capitol Exhibit. Each year a winner in each division - elementary, middle, and high school -- is selected in the Flag Contest and 100 pieces of artwork are selected to hang in the state Capitol in Austin. NISD had the 1st place winner in the elementary division of the flag contest and also had one art piece selected to be hung in the state Capitol.

Clark HS student recognized as U.S. Congressional Art winner

The U.S. Congressional Art Competition is a national competition offered to high school art students each year. Students enter original artworks based on a theme initiated by the U.S. House of Representatives. Hyun Ah (Christina) Lee is the sole winner from NISD this year. As part of the award for winning, she receives an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for her and her family, and her artwork will hang in the Capitol Building for one year.

VASE State Winners recognized

VASE competition allows academically eligible high school students an opportunity to present and defend their original artwork one-on-one with a certified art juror in order to qualify for state. This year 19 pieces advanced to state and 14 received 1st place state medals. The Gold Seal Award is given to the top artwork selected from all the 1st place medal winners across the state of Texas; Northside ISD captured 2 of these Gold Seals.

Brandeis’ “Madonna” named a One-Act Play Regional Alternate

Since the school's opening, Brandeis High School's UIL One Act Play has ranked in the top 20 5A High School programs in the state. By qualifying for Regionals every year and appearing at the state meet last year, Brandeis HS UIL One Act Play has the most consecutive wins for a new school in Texas. Brandeis' artistry and achievement have been commemorated with a photo of their production on the UIL Academic website. Congratulations to the cast of "Madonna."

Brennan’s “Cinderella Waltz” named a One-Act Play Regional Qualifier

The University Interscholastic League One-Act Play Contest, founded in 1927, is the largest high school play production contest in the world. More than 14,000 Texas high school students participate in Zone, District, Area, Region, and State contest. In the UIL 4A One Act Contest, Brennan HS was named a 2011 One Act Play Regional Qualifier for their performance of "Cinderella Waltz."

Taft student lone actor selected from area for all-state production

The Texas Thespian All State production of "Our Town" was performed in Corpus Christi this year. Out of the thousands of students auditioning throughout the state of Texas, Zachary Teague, a senior at Taft High School was the only San Antonio actor selected for this production. In addition, Teague was elected this year to the Texas Thespian Student State Board, where he served as communications liaison for all the Thespian Troupes in Texas.

NISD Thespians advance to national competition

Students from O'Connor, Taft, Stevens and Clark high schools will be representing the state of Texas at this year's National Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska in June, 2011. These students will compete for national honors in various theatre categories. As state winners, they also qualify to audition for college and university scholarships.

Thornton music teacher receives outstanding teacher award from UTSA

ReNee Nadeau, Thornton Elementary Music Teacher, has been selected as the very first recipient of the Charlotte Louise Dashiell and Lota M. Spell Endowment Outstanding Cooperating Teacher Award from The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Holmes HS TSA students dominate state competition

The Technology Student Association (TSA) promotes critical thinking and problem solving through competitive events. Students are challenged to apply technological skills and engineering principles as individuals and in teams. The TSA state winners competed in events related to their training in the content areas of metal production, architectural graphics and communication graphics.

Students showcase workmanship and tech skills at state competition

Skills USA produces quality, well-trained, entry-level employees by developing leadership skills and pride in workmanship in such areas as automotive service technology, automotive collision repair, cosmetology, construction, welding and electrical trades. Skills USA state winners are recognized for their superior workmanship and acquisition of high-level, technological occupational skills.

HOSA students shine at state competition

The Health Occupations Students of America organization hosts competitive events that test knowledge of medical terminology and medical procedures. Students competing in these events show they possess the knowledge and skills that will allow them to deliver safe, effective, efficient, quality health care.

FCCLA students showcase skills at state competition

Family Career Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) helps students expand their leadership potential and develop skills through planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision making and interpersonal communication. Through competition, students strengthen their creative, critical thinking and vocational skills.

BPA students garner wins at state competition

Business Professionals of America helps prepare students by advancing their leadership, citizenship, technology, and academic skills. State winners are recognized for their excellence in achieving the skills required for a world-class workforce.

O’Connor FFA students are state winners

FFA develops student potential for leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural leadership activities. Leadership Development Events focus on creating situations for members to demonstrate their abilities in public speaking, decision making, communication and their knowledge of agriculture and the FFA organization.

Students build robots for national competition

FIRST, or For Inspirations and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an innovative robotics competition which builds knowledge of science, technology and engineering. Students work under strict rules, limited resources and time limits to design, build and program a robot to perform a specific function based on sound engineering principles. Students competed in head-to-head competitions against other teams from across Texas, United States and Mexico.

Students among top cyber patriots in nation

Cyber Patriot is a high school cyber defense competition in which teams must defend servers and a computer network from active attacks. Students must find vulnerabilities, anticipate hackers and know what to do when their firewall has been penetrated, all while avoiding shutdown of their servers. Students from Brennan and Warren were part of the team from Information Technology and Security Academy who advanced to national competition in Washington, D.C. and won 3rd place in the nation.

O’Connor teacher receives outstanding educator award

Rita Woodfill, O'Connor HS, is one of 20 high school educators in the nation to receive the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Educator Award. The NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Educator Award recognizes high school educators for supporting young women's participation in computing and technology. Each Educator Award recipient will receive up to $1,000 for professional development related to computing education. She was selected from more than 900 applications.

Warren’s World Scholars Cup Team advances to Malaysia

On Saturday, April 23, teams from throughout the state gathered at Pasadena High School in Houston for the World Scholars Cup Regional Meet. The event was emceed by former Houston Mayor Bill White.

NISD students advance to state Academic Decathlon competition

Academic Decathlon is a program that provides high school students across the U.S. an opportunity to experience the challenges of rigorous academic competition through participation in team activities. In addition, the Academic Decathlon involves members of the business/industry as active supporters of a program promoting academic excellence. Students are tested in ten categories: Art, Economics, Essay, Music, Language and Literature, Speech, Interview, Mathematics, Science, and Super Quiz. Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals are awarded for individual and team scores. Winning teams advance through local, regional, and state levels of competition.

Top finalists in JA Bank from O’Connor HS

The GT Leadership students competed in the JA Banks in Action 2010-2011 North American Competition to see how effective they are at managing a bank. By taking on the role of banking business leaders, they made corporate decisions to steer their banks to success. Each bank's performance is based on the following factors: net profit, return on assets, return on equity, loan share, deposit share, and capital ratio. After the city-wide competition, the top five teams advanced to the North American competition, where they came in second place.

Seventh graders score at grand level

Three seventh grade GT students scored at the Grand Recognition Level of the Duke University annual Talent Search Program. SAT or ACT college entrance examinations are administered through the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP). Duke TIP routinely evaluates their ceremony score levels to make sure that they are in line with the national percentile rankings (NPR) for juniors and seniors (traditional testers) taking the SAT and ACT.

Students score big on National Spanish Exam

The National Spanish Examination Contest was given by more than 3,500 teachers throughout the United States. The National Spanish Exam recognizes achievement in the study of the Spanish language; and encourages further interest in the teaching and learning of Spanish.

Brandeis teacher receives prestigious Duden Award

Brandeis teacher Brigitte Deyle received the "Duden Award," which recognizes a teacher of German for outstanding efforts and achievements in providing high-quality instruction in German. This year is the 22nd year for the Duden Award. This award is presented by the "Bibliographisches Institut" and the "American Association of Teachers of German."

Brandeis scores on National German Exam best in SA

The purpose of the National German Examination is to recognize achievement in the study of the German language, and to promote proficiency in the German language. This examination is administered each year to more than 26,000 students in the United States. Three students from Brandeis High School scored above 90 percent on this difficult examination. They were the only students from San Antonio to achieve this accomplishment.

German students garner top awards at state competition

The state contest, hosted by the University of Texas at Austin in February, is the culminating German language event for the three regional Texas competitions. The contest includes events in academic, cultural, and performance categories. More than 1,500 students from more than 90 schools competed this year. This makes the Texas German contests the largest contest in the nation and the only one of its kind.

Students advance to state history competition

Texas History Day, a part of the National History Day program, is a yearlong education program that culminates in an annual state-level history fair for students in grades six through 12. It provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their interest in and knowledge of history through creative and original papers, performances, documentaries, websites, or three-dimensional exhibits. This year NISD had a large number of students who won regional competition and qualified for the state competition in Austin.

Rawlinson MS represents District at National Science Bowl

Northside ISD, with corporate support from Booz Allen Hamilton and Mitre Corporation, has hosted the South Central Texas Regional Middle School and High School Science Bowls for the last several years. Each school fields up to three teams each with four members and one alternate. Teams compete in a game show format academic quiz on science, math, and technology topics. The winning team advances to the National Middle School Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. In addition to the academic competition, each middle school team designed, built, and raced a model solar-powered car. This year, Rawlinson Middle School represented NISD at the national competition.

Clark HS yearbook wins Balfour publishing award

Clark High School's yearbook, The Witness, has been featured as an exemplar in Balfour's Yearbook of yearbooks as a National Design Manual winner. Balfour published copies of The Witness to share with high schools across the nation.

Clark, Marshall, Stevens garner awards at Interscholastic League Press Conference

The Interscholastic League Press Conference, the journalism branch of the University Interscholastic League, conducts competitions that result in individual awards and ratings of student publications. The Marshall Rampage earned this highest ranking for the 17^th consecutive year and was nominated as finalist for the Star Award, the highest overall honor a student newspaper can receive from the UIL. The Clark Chronicle placed in the top 10 percent of newspapers statewide through the Interscholastic Press Association.

O’Connor student wins third at Texas Forensic Association State Tournament

Erin Dunbar, a student at O'Connor High School, placed third in the Congressional Debate at the Texas Forensic Association State Tournament. The Texas Forensic Association promotes the interests of interscholastic speech by encouraging a spirit of fellowship among participating students and teachers. Activities viewed as central to the organization's function include debate, theatre, and competitive individual speaking events.

O’Connor students qualify for national NFL tournament

The National Forensic League vision is that every child in the United States will be empowered to become an effective communicator, ethical individual, critical thinker, and leader in a democratic society. Tournament events include humorous interpretation, extemporaneous speaking, dramatic interpretation, and congressional debate.

Marshall student receives as UIL journalism award

Lauren Zook, a student at Marshall High School, was the recipient of the University Interscholastic League award. The UIL sponsors four journalism contests - news writing, feature writing, editorial writing, and headline writing. Students compete at the district level, and then the top three places advance to regional competition. From regional competition, the top three places advance to state competition.

American Scholastic Press Association Award recipients recognized

The quality of a school's publications and how they present themselves to their reading community is a guidepost to the quality of the publishing school. ASPA, through its competition, provides advice on page design, story layout, graphics, headlining, cover design, advertising placement, photography and a variety of other useful items. Each literary magazine is scored on a point system by a panel of judges who are experienced faculty advisers for scholastic publications.

Dana Kay Barber Writing Award recipients recognized

Sponsored by Abydos Learning International, Inc. (formerly the New Jersey Writing Project in Texas), this statewide competition recognizes outstanding student writers of prose and poetry at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Students and their families are honored at a reception at the Abydos Learning Trainers' and Teachers' Annual Conference.

Scholastic Art and Writing Award recipient recognized

Kirsten Bonifacio, a student at Luna Middle School, is the recipient of the 2010 Scholastic Art and Writing Award. The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers and its 108 Regional Affiliates recognize young artists and writers with Gold Keys, Silver Keys, and Honorable Mention Certificates. This year submissions numbered more than 180,000 works of art and writing from across the nation. Each work is reviewed by a panel of arts professionals for the following criteria: originality, technical skill, and emergence of personal vision or voice.

Marshall HS chemistry teacher recognized as Trinity Prize winner

Linda M. Kelly, a chemistry teacher at Marshall High School, is one of two San Antonio high school science educators to be named winner of the 2011 Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching. She was chosen from 19 distinguished educators who were nominated by their school districts in recognition of outstanding performance in public education. After teaching 23 years, Kelly still proclaims, "Chemistry is my love."

Purchasing Department receives Award of Merit

The NISD Purchasing Department received an Award of Merit from the Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO). Much of the award's emphasis is based on the Best Practices in Purchasing as identified by the Legislative Budget Board during the Texas School Performance Review process, and on the Purchasing Module in the Management Section of the Financial Accountability System Resource Guide published by the Texas Education Agency.

Connally principal receives “Outstanding Administrator” award

Cornelius Phelps, principal of Connally MS, was honored with the 2011 Outstanding Administrator Award by the Texas Caucus of Black School Board Members (TCBSBM). He received the award at the TCBSBM Summit recently, along with $500 for the school.

O’Connor and Taft marching bands among best in state

The O'Connor and Taft High School marching bands qualified for the Texas State UIL Marching Contest in 2010.

Student musicians names to state ensembles

Several Northside students were selected to the Texas Music Educators Association All State Band, Choir, Orchestra or Jazz Ensemble.

Marshall High School journalism students receive state recognition

Marshall High School student journalists garnered multiple individual achievement awards at this summer's Interscholastic League Press Conference at the University of Texas.

Several Northside ISD publications earned recognition at the Texas Association of Journalism Educators Fall Fiesta convention in San Antonio in October.

Clark High School Newspaper honored by National Scholastic Press Association

The Chronicle, the Clark High School newspaper, earned a Pacemaker Award, one of the highest national awards a high school newspaper can receive, from the National Scholastic Press Association.

O’Connor Ag Mechanics team fourth in the nation

O'Connor High School placed fourth in the nation in the FFA's Ag Mechanics event, which tests both technical and agricultural mechanics skills. During the event, members completed a written exam and demonstrated problem-solving and hands-on performance skills.

O’Connor High School takes first place in state FFA competition

O'Connor High School won first place at the state FFA competition for both levels of Chapter Conducting, making it the first time in at least 25 years that a single high school won both the junior and senior levels of the contest.

NISD represented at National Junior Classical League Competition

Northside high school students attended the annual National Junior Classical League Competition at North Dakota State University in Fargo last summer. These students participated in academic, artistic, and athletic competitions with some of the best Latin students from around the country. NISD students are:

Cross-Country runners represent NISD at state

In Cross-Country, Northside had six individuals from four high schools who finished in the top 10 out of more than 150 runners at the Region 4 Cross-Country Meet. These outstanding student/athletes went on the represent Northside at the state cross country meet. They are:

The Stevens High School Varsity Football Team was recognized for making it to the 5A state semifinals. With a record of 11-4, the Stevens Falcons advanced to the state semifinals to play Pearland at the Alamodome. Team members include:

Martin Elementary receives official “green building” certification

Martin Elementary School has received the “Silver” certification of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System. The LEED rating system was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C.

Health Careers teacher is an outstanding Texas Ex

Nancy Ramos, a biology teacher at Health Careers High School, was selected as one of the 2011 honorees of the Texas Exes Awards for Outstanding Teachers...

O’Connor student receives national computing honor

Danielle Chapa has received the national National Center for Women and Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing.

Clark student wins 2010 YOSA concerto contest

Louis Coy, senior clarinetist in the Clark High School band, was selected as the concerto winner of the 2010 Youth Orchestra of San Antonio Concerto Contest.

Citizenship Award presented to five students who rescued real estate agent

The Northside Citizenship Award was created in 1999 to recognize deserving individuals who have made a positive impact on the Northside ISD community. The Citizenship Award is presented to individuals and/or groups whose actions are "above and beyond the normal day's scope of activities" and/or may be unique.

NISD honored for excellence in financial reporting

The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to Northside ISD by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR).

NISD Aquatics coach receives Ousley Award

Dr. Laura Cox, a molecular gene scientist at Southwest Research Institute and a part-time coach/consultant for the NISD Aquatics Program for more than 20 years, is the recipient of the "Ousley Award".

Brandeis AFJROTC cadets receive Legion of Valor Bronze cross

Brandeis High School Air Force JROTC cadets Dawn Naville and Jonathan Mercer recently were awarded the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross.

Board recognizes Northside Suburban Little League World Champions

The Northside Suburban All-Stars recently captured the Senior League Softball World Series title with a 17-0 record.

Daniel Leija, a fifth grade teacher at Esparza ES, has been chosen as a finalist in the Texas Teacher of the Year program.

Carnahan science teacher named finalist for Presidential Award

Kent Page, a fifth grade teacher at Carnahan ES known for his hands-on lessons with students, has been named a finalist for the prestigious Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program.

Stevens HS yearbook and newspaper receive All American rating

Both the 2009-2010 Stevens yearbook, Tradition, and the school newspaper, The Talon, have received the All American rating from the National Scholastic Press Association.
